Publisher's summary

The inspiration for the hit Fox series Bones, Kathy Reichs explores another high-stakes crime from today's headlines, in a case that lands forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan in the middle of a gruesome international scheme.

Summoned to South Carolina to fill in for a negligent colleague, Tempe is stuck teaching at a lackluster archeology field school in the ruins of a Native American burial ground on the Charleston shore. But when Tempe stumbles upon a fresh skeleton among the ancient bones, her old friend Emma Rousseau, the local coroner, persuades Tempe to stay on and help with the investigation. When Emma reveals a disturbing secret, it becomes more important than ever for Tempe to help her friend close the case.

The body count begins to climb. Tempe follows the trail to a free street clinic with a belligerent staff, a suspicious doctor, and a donor who is a charismatic televangelist. Clues abound in the most unlikely places as Tempe uses her unique knowledge and skills to build her case, even as the local sheriff remains dubious and her own life is threatened.

Don't miss any of Tempe Brennan's investigations.

Narrator is AWFUL!!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I couldn't even make it out of Part 1, the narrator is awful. The storyline seems okay though...going to get the eBook to read.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

didn't get there, going to read the eBook

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Horribly thick voice that is difficult to understand at first. Narrator cannot make different voices, so you can hardly tell what characters are speaking. After listening to the narrator of the last book, Cross Bones, this one is HORRIBLE. Makes Brennan sound like she is 80 years old, hardly any emotion comes across in the voice. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL...and I am usually able to adjust to different narrators quite well. GET THE eBOOK!! This audio narrator sucks...luckily she only did one book!

Do you think Break No Bones needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Of course, and there are follow-ups...<3 Kathy Reichs :)

Any additional comments?

Go with an eBook or hard copy on this book...audio version SUCKS.

The narrating didn't match

Previous narration had been so good. Threw narrator for this book sounded too much like a sweet little gramma reading a story at bedtime. Took awhile for me to overcome the voice to enjoy the book. Almost didn't finish it, but I did. Glad I did.

Good story. Lousy narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Dorothee Berryman’s performances?

This narrator is completely wrong for this book and actually I do not plan to select any book narrated by Dorothee Berryman. She whispers, sort of. I want to go to sleep listening to her. She has ruined a good author's work.

TOO MANY BODIES AND TOO MANY LOVERS

What made the experience of listening to Break No Bones the most enjoyable?

The narrator was excellent. She did a magnificent job of doing the accents from the South to Canada.

What did you like best about this story?

Tempie - she always tried to mind her own business and do her work, but karma and the world have different ideas.

Have you listened to any of Dorothee Berryman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Only if she's done other books by Kathy Reichs. She's excellent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Tempie is about to explode with too much professional and personal pressure on her.

Great story. Worst Production I've listened to.

the reader is talented, but she is the wrong paystubs for this book. Makes Brennan sound 20yrs older that she is, that's distracting.

The word is pronounced Gar rot... not Garrett. again distracting.

Some chapters have a 30 second gap, others stumble.

stop changing readers! find a good one and stick with her.

Excellent

Like the many characters with character and the South Carolina surroundings. Forensic anthropology comes in as a smart smelly science!

I agree - TERRIBLE READER

I've enjoyed the earlier Tempe books, but find this reader absolutely unbearable - I even looked to see if someone else had read the abridged version, since much as I prefer unabridged, I'd have gotten the abridged if it had a decent reader.
I'll add my pleas to others here (and I wish I had read these reviews before I bought the audio book): PLEASE don't use this awful reader again.

Will not keep your attention!!!!

The narrator is terrible to listen to. Everything is completely monotone, with no feeling. I love the series, but could not get into this book because of the narrator.
