Publisher's Summary

Technology has advanced in 2060 New York City, but childbirth has been the same since the beginning of time. And despite the brutal double homicide on Lieutenant Eve Dallas' caseload, she has to be there for her pregnant friend, Mavis, even if it means throwing the dreaded baby shower.

But Mavis needs an even bigger favor now. Tandy Willowby, one of the moms-to-be in her class, has gone missing, just days before her due date - not even showing up at the shower at Eve and Roarke's place that she'd been looking forward to so much. A recent emigrant from London, Tandy has few friends in New York, and no family. When Eve enters Tandy's apartment and finds Mavis' shower gift wrapped and ready on the table - and Tandy's packed hospital bag still on the floor - her spine starts tingling.

Normally, this would be turned over to Missing Persons. Eve has more than enough on her plate trying to find out who murdered Natalie Copperfield and her fiancé, both employed at a highly prestigious accounting firm. But Mavis wants no one but Eve on the case - and Eve can't say no. She'll have to track Tandy down while tracing the deals and double-crosses hidden in the files of some of the city's richest and most secretive citizens, in a race against a particularly vicious killer.

Luckily, she has her multimillionaire husband Roarke's expertise to help with the numbers-crunching. But as he mines for the crucial data that will break the case wide open, Eve faces an all-too-real danger in the flesh-and-blood world.

Crack another case with Eve Dallas.

What the Critics Say

"The audio skips smoothly along, connecting subplots blithely, and Susan Ericksen never misses a beat." (AudioFile)

    "I loved it."

Classic Nora -- fantasy, mystery, love, and suspense, all wrapped up with a ridiculously happy ending. The narrator does a great job and it's just great, fun, escape.

    "Another Great Dallas Story"
If you could sum up Born in Death in three words, what would they be?

Dallas and Rorke continue to evolve, and Mavis gives birth, while another killer is brought down. What more is there to say? :)

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

I have listened to the entire series up to this point, and Susan is outstanding in almost all of them. There was one or two titles where she seemed to lose her rhythm, but she is back on track here. Her use of separate voices for each character makes it easy to picture the conversation going on, and help keep the story flowing without the constant

    Any additional comments?

If you love the Dallas series, this one will make you happy. If you are not familiar with the series, you should probably start back at volume 1. Though each title mostly stands on its own, there is a definite progression of the characters and their relationships, and the story makes more sense with that background.

I would listen to this again. Great story and wonderful performance by the actor who read it.

What other book might you compare Born in Death to and why?

Any of the In Death books

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I actually had a voice to the character in my head and it was perfectly matched.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    I tried!

    Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed Susan Ericksen's reading of this series.

    "I loved this book."

I love the whole 'Death' series. I have read and listened to them all repeatedly. Of course Dallas' case in this one is complex and demanding. But Mavis giving birth is the best part of the book. If you don't laugh out loud at Dallas and Roark trying to get thru childbirth, then there is something wrong w/ you. Best ending to a book I've listened to in long time.

    Story
    "Babies, Babies and more!"
Where does Born in Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

No sure. The "In-death" series is my favorite and all installments including the novella's are excellent.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot and sub-plots and that the story moves quickly. Lots of emotion in this one!

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have listened to Susan almost thru the entire series. I love how she has each main, secondary and guest voices down to a science. You can always tell who's speaking. The series (audio) would be nothing without her.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Laugh out loud funny!

    Any additional comments?

I would have given this one 5 stars because I was laughing out loud due to the reactions of birthing classes Eve and Roarke attended for Mavis! This really is 4 1/2 stars, what was missing for me was more of Dr. Mira. She played a very small part in this and I like the way she handles Eve, almost as good as Roarke. Not only was this installment (#23) laugh out loud but it was awesome to see Roarke actually lose his cool to the degree of rage. It's funny that he got so pissed with the NYPSD for covering their butts even though he knew that they had every right to do so. It was disturbing to see Eve almost lose her cool and start to cry. I didn't think she could but that just shows how much she loves Roarke and treasures their relationship. Summerset was cool and controlled until Mavis asked him for a particular favor, that part almost had me in tears!

A double murder and a missing person, WOW, Eve really had a lot on her plate this time around. Very interesting plot line and the story moved pretty quickly, never a dull moment. Babies, babies and more babies. I loved that Eve had to give the shower but even gladder (?) that Peabody took over. (LOL) I will definitely read this one again!

    "Loved it."

Loved this story a friend of Mavis goes missing and Eve promises her she'll try and find her. A couple of accountants are murdered and Eve has to try and solve this case as well as the missing person, and on top of all that Eve has to hold a baby shower for Mavis and the baby is born. Truly a full book
