Publisher's summary

The winner of a Ned Kelly Award and numerous other prizes for his eclectic body of work, Garry Disher is known for his razor-sharp police procedurals. In this entry from his popular Challis/Destry series, passion complicates matters for the two Australian officers. Now that they are lovers, Detective Inspector Hal Challis and Sergeant Ellen Destry must guard their affections closely, for romantic relationships are strictly forbidden by department regulations. Trying to keep their professional and personal lives separate, they investigate the brutal assault of a private school chaplain as well as the murder of a public official. Applying further pressure is a prominent politician who has no love for police and wants the first case closed quickly. Disher is in top form for this thrilling mystery that adds a fresh dynamic to an already dazzling series.

Critic reviews

“[A] superior police procedural … the personal interactions among Challis and his colleagues will quickly engage even newcomers.” ( Publishers Weekly)

One of my favourite audiobooks.

Have read this half a dozen times. Completely believable, so real. Feel I am there in Australia!

Another good Hal Challis book

Unfortunately, this narrator is not the greatest, but I found it possible to get past it most of the time. Some of the books in this series are by other narrators, one of them very good, so far. The stories in this series are interesting in a believable way. It is best to start with the first book in order to be up with the changes in the characters' lives. Australia is an important character in the series, adding interest.

Narrator ruins the book

This narrator spoiled the book for me. The narrator of the previous book, Drew de Carvalho, was very good. Unfortunately I won’t be able to listen to most of these books, which are otherwise very good due to this narrator. His narration consists of reading the book out loud with no attempt to differentiate between characters. And his voice grates on my nerves. I have come to have higher expectations for the narration on audiobooks. Spoiled maybe. This didn’t cut it.

Disappointed..

If I wanted liberal politics I would have purchased 'What Happened'. The women's issues have become old and tiresome--as well as rest of the leftist narrative. Story and characters have just become vehicles for the author's opinions. I read for relaxation and enjoyment and found neither in this book.
