Publisher's summary

There's a witch running loose in the town of Excelsior, Minnesota, and her brew is… beer. Actually, Leona Cunningham, co-owner of The Barleywine, is a practitioner of Wicca, the nature-based religion that many mistakenly believe to be sorcery or black magic. But that doesn't bother the thirsty crowds - or the Halloween Committee members who have fallen under the spell of Leona's tasty ales.

Then, after one too many pints, local alcohol aficionado Ryan McMurphy accuses Leona of being a real witch, blaming her for the series of accidents that have happened throughout town. When Ryan ends up dead, without a mark on his body, Leona is not only the target of a witch hunt but also the prime suspect. But with Betsy on the case, the murderer doesn't have a ghost of a chance of getting away with it….

Charming "Who Done It?"

These are all good 'three stars.' If a change from teeth grinding suspense and gory descriptions of macabre emotional mayhem are what you seek perhaps a small town 'murder ' may be in order. This is an amusing tale of committee meetings, grudges, brewing beer, needlework and knitting. And a death from maybe natural causes. The sort of story you can put down for a while, and happily return to again and listen some more.

Halloween Cozy

Blackwork was the first book I read in the Needlecraft Series by Monica Ferris and I really enjoyed the story and the narrator. I like cozy mysteries but have trouble finding ones I like the narrator on. This was not only an interesting plot but the narrator was easy to listen to. I know this is not the first book in the series but I wanted a Halloween themed cozy since this is October. If you enjoy cozy mysteries and want a light easy listen with a Halloween theme then try this book. I will be listening to more of this series I just wish Audible had them all.

Ugh witchcraft

I just can’t stand witchcraft!
This book is full of it and I was very dissatisfied to find it out

Welcome back, Susan Boyce!

Yes! If you've listened to these in order, you've noticed that there was a bit of a lag with the narrator, but with Susan Boyce back, the characters come alive again. Honestly, I felt it was a nice twist at the end. Whew!

love Susan Boyce back

as narrator. Thought the murder method had been given away too early until I realized that that did not give away the murderer.

Excellent light fare for needlework lovers

Decent story, a little too obvious of a plot, but I still really enjoyed it although it seems an odd way to commit murder it was at least original (at least I have never seen the use of dry ice in a murder). I stitched whilst listening, it was a perfect pastime together, I loved every minute of it.

The writer knows a fair bit about needlepoint/cross stitch, but I don't think she stitches as there are mistakes an experienced needleworker wouldn't make.

Enjoyable, easy listening

This is an enjoyable story with interesting characters. The mystery unfolds well. I had missed this narrator and glad she is back! The way she narrates each character is how I have come to recognize them. So I prefer her narration over anyone else's. Easy listening and cozy atmosphere, what I have come to like about the Needlework Mysteries!
