Burned-out Hollywood screenwriter Bo Aikens is fed up with life in Los Angeles. He heads out of the hustle and bustle of the big city and arrives in picturesque Black River in Northern California, seeking relaxation and artistic inspiration. In small, idyllic Black River, nearly everyone is happy, contented, and welcoming of strangers. But despite the beautiful setting, Bo begins to feel unsettled after several disturbing incidents. He discovers that all of his money has been transferred to a bank account in Black River, and a house has been purchased for him by someone on "his" instructions.
Troubled by various, peculiar twists of fate, Bo decides to leave Black River. As he becomes entangled in a nightmarish plot, preventing his return home, it suddenly seems clear to Bo that his perfect little hideaway captures more than just the imagination of its visitors.
"Black River" appeared in print in Mystery Scene Magazine #63 in 2000.

Koontz fans can enjoy a short slice of delicious storytelling by the master of speculative fiction. The story is typical of Koontz which will make some happy and others not so interest, but what brings it to life is Brick, who is an amazing narrator. Like all of the best narrators, Brick's voice adds an entirely other element to the book's atmosphere. In the end, it's a win-win situation pairing these two together.
I really like Knootz for his dark humor and twisted endings. No humor in this book. Other than the twist at the end the book is a total flop. It felt like he threw something together at the last minute just to meet his contractual agreement with the publisher. Too bad because the ending would actually make a great story if developed at length. Hated the reader too.
I liked the audio version of Black River much more than when I read it in Mystery Scene Magazine. Scott Brick's narration made it much more enjoyable. Koontz's early work is different from his more recent stuff, but still good.
Be aware that this is a short story. It has Koontz' signature style; yet, I was surprised and disappointed. The suspense was building and all of the sudden all your questions were answer. There was so much more that could have been done with the plot line. The book begs for more.
Hopelessly addicted to Audio Books! I started listening as a distraction to the aggravation of driving, now I listen all the time :)
If you think of this more like a Twilight Zone episode versus a novel or a short story, you'll enjoy it.
It's a decent listen. The reader is good and the story is not great, but decent to good.
Loved it - from beginning to end. Ok, so I too thought it was a regular book, come to find out it's only 2 hours long. Still, it was an edge-of-your-seat type of story! If you're a true Dean Koontz fan, you'll love this little Novella.
Good reading and will hold your interest if you are a true book lover. Would not be on the great one list. This book ended too soon.
This is a most excellent story. It ranks way up there with the best that Koontz has ever written. I have this story on my iPod because I intend to hear it again and again. What a great tale!
I have enjoyed every Koontz book that I have every read / listen to. This is not exception. I just love how he leaves so much untold and leaves it to the listener to "finish" the story, after he drops the bomb at the end. :)
"A must read for Dean Koontz fans"
As one of Dean Koontz's biggest fans I have read practically everything he has written. Black River is written in the unique Dean Koontz style with the supernatural twist at the end which he is known and loved for. However Black River is the most humorous Mr Koontz book I have listened to or read and the narrator definately adds to this, with a very dry sense of humor.
I keep this book on my media player and have listened to it at least 60 times, it makes me laugh everytime. A must for all you die hard Dean Koontz fans and a great introduction to his work for all the people who have yet to convert to this wonderful author.
