Publisher's summary

The murder of one wannabe starlet may only be the beginning for a vicious killer.

When poor little New Hampshire rich girl Mindy Hollis gets lost in Los Angeles, her big sister hires private detective Ed Traynor to find her. Traynor and Hollis's security chief, Jack McMahon, take off for Tinseltown to track down the aspiring actress - but they discover the only part she ever got was the one that killed her.

Their hunt for her killers takes them from the bowels of Mexico City to the glitz of Los Angeles, north to the set of The Black Orchid in Vancouver, and then back again to Hollywood, where the angels are dying in the dark. It's up to Ed and Jack to save them before the film fades to black.

Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for listeners interested in fiction - novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times best seller or a national best seller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Interesting and frustrating!

The story line in the first half of the book was good but it became more and more unrealistic and illogical in the second half. Also, the errors in the use of Spanish were incredible. If an author is going to use a foreign language, then he/she/they should ensure it is correct.

Spellbinding

In "Black Orchid" Vaughan C Hardacker gives a plausible and very gripping retelling of a story reminiscent of The Black Dahlia. In this version, the killer(s) get their cumuppance.

Good story, except:

The story line was good, and kept making me want to hear more, but the little pointers and tips given at the beginning of each chapter were absolutely stupid. Anyone who reads crime novels is already familiar with these cutesy little ‘tips.’ I would sample another Hardacker novel, but will immediately drop it, should these dumb little blurbs be present.

Water?

In the trek through the desert, not once was the need or consumption of water discussed. All of them would have perished.

Great Story, Annoying Narration

The constant mispronunciation of the Spanish names and words almost ruined this book for me. I almost stopped listening and deleted this book, even though the story is terrific. Why can't Audible find narrators who are professional enough to learn the pronunciation of foreign words? This narrator also has a very narrow range of tones, making it confusing in figuring out which character is speaking.

Well I listened to the whole thing.

Ok but all the quotes from the law book sources throughout the whole thing... irritating

Hmmm. No thanks.

I can't tell if it's the narration or the story itself, but this book is really hokey. I could only stand one hour of it.

Get it right!

This was a silly book. I was attracted by the location of the story. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, traveled to Mexico and currently live in Arizona. This reader mispronounced names of cities, food and the writer just didn’t get it right.

I appreciate a writer that researches what they are writing, that didn’t happen here.

Oh well, you get what you pay for.
