"It's a shame every bad girl can't plead for redemption with the swashbuckling verve of the aging biker babe Billie Morgan....She's got enough personality to carry the novel." (The New York Times Book Review)
This book is remarkably well written and fantastically narrated by the author. Billy Morgan is a humourous, intelligent, straight talking character, who you warm to immediately. As her life unfolds, you gain insight into a dark and cruel world, that only Billy's strength of character, resilience and humour allows her to survive (albeit, not entirely intact).
This remarkably brave writing has the ring of truth and authenticity that can only come from real life experience. I enjoyed reading this book very much, but must caution that it is no light tale and if you are looking for an airy, feel good story - this book it not for you.
However, if you are brave enough to face our society's reality at its worst, if you are ready to laugh and cry, if you want to read a moving and remarkably well told story - Give Billy Morgan a try.
Don't be fooled into thinking this is a book about a biker chick. It's about a messed up woman who has had a rough life from the time her father abandoned her. It's a Cinderella tale without the fairy godmother - well, except when she becomes the fairy godmother for another character in the book.
I actually began this book and put it aside when the going got a little too disturbing. I finally forged forward when I ran out of new listens and am so glad I did. This has to be one of the best I have heard since I finished the Dragon Tattoo series. I only wish Audible would offer more of Ms Denby's novels. The plot meanders a bit, but with perseverance and patience, you will be rewarded with an incredible accounting of the life of Billie and the cast of characters that make up her world.
I have found novels narrated by the author's to be the best so far. I love good narrators and won't finish a book by a bad one. This one is an absolute must. You are watching real life in your mind as this book progresses. The characters in the book all have a life and sound of their own. At no time during this did I think "I wish she would sound more like a guy or an older woman." I was lost in the world of Billie Morgan!
I did have an extreme reaction to this book causing me to quit the book. Kind of like how I felt at the end of the first season of "Breaking Bad." I don't go in for violence for violence's sake. I don't know why, now that I have gone back and finished the book. It was not as bad as I thought at the time. I am so glad I went back to listen to it and so very much appreciate the way that Joolz Denby narrated this. The book is done mostly in first person and it was like I was in a room with Billie listening to her life story.
I think it's unfair to file this book under "Biker Chick Gone Wild". This is a fantastic story of a wronged child who grows up trying constantly to find someone who will love her and not abandon her. I feel strangely protective of this character. If only I could defend her from her "Mum" and let her know that she has worth. Strange that I felt this way by the end of the book. Wonderful tale, great job Joolz Denby!
Let me just say that you will not waste your credit. Fact I was completely done with part one; but my husband and I were on a 90min roadtrip. I purposly
started the book over. That so he could enjoy with me. He did but more I thorougly loved this listen even more the 2nd time around.
I wish that Audible would get more my Joolz Denby.
Sentient Being, Planet Earth
Disappointment. I forced myself to lisen to the first half. While the story had promise, the heavyness of the British accent got old, fast. The story perseverated on one event...I kept saying, "get over it".
Save your credit.
"Enjoyable from start to finish."
Having grown up in Billies time I found this book most enjoyable. The characters are true to the era and wholly believable.
Very well written and narrated by the author who made the characters come alive and I had to keep reminding myself that this was a work of fiction. This is the first Joolz Denby I have listened to but will search her out for more delightful listening/reading.
"Powerful, poetic and brutal"
Wonderful book, brilliant reading. Brutal, shocking and very adult in its themes, but uplifting, gripping and rewarding. A breathtaking piece of story telling, which is better than most Booker Prize winners I've read. There is plenty of swearing, violence and tragedy, but the style is poetic and the persective always uplifting.
It's hard to describe the story, but it certainly isn't a crime thriller; it's the self confession of Billie Morgan, who narrates her tale (an autobiographical account of a tragic incident in the past, and its implications)through tears of defiance. Wavering beween self hatered and a belief that she is worth more than life has thrown at her; there is emotion, empathy and compassion. Billie's story is fascinating and horrible; but we love her for her perspective on it.
A great listen, my mother loved this book, even though she never swears!
Good listen! I enjoyed this book,I was hoping for more of a biker gang tail, however the direction the story took was still very enthralling.
P.S. Bradford is awful, don't let her hood wink you haha.
"Not as advertised but still pretty good"
Pretty good narration, and put feeling into it, and a pretty decent story
The main character Billy
Not really a "biker" story but kind of incidental to her "life story" but found it to be very addictive listening
"The twists & turns of a genuine ex-biker girl"
Excellent and refreshing work. Great storyline and well read by author.
On edge of seat until final few words. A great read! Will definitely be listening to more of Joolz Denby's work in future.
"Thought provoking and enthralling"
I loved this book, I could not stop listening to it, I made my self late for meetings and stayed up far later than I should have done, because I could not wait to hear the next part. I have never read any Joolz Denby previously but I will certainly try more if this is typical of the quality of work to be expected. The characters came alive with the fantastic prose, the fact that Joolz herself narrated the story, I feel, made sure that emphasis was placed on the words that the author had meant to stand out. Quite an exceptional book, that has kept me thinking long long after I finished. A triumph (no pun intended)!
"Best story teller I have ever heard !"
The Narration !
Never read a book like this before !
10 out of 10, The emotion, the clarity, the voice changes, and the complete dedication she did to read this book is by far the best I have heard.
Yes the horrible twist and turns towards the end, where Billie finds out the horrible truth of her closest friends.
Loved this book, we all know the story. But what Joolz does best is deliver an astonishing performance throughout. The is so much attention to detail, so much emotion put into the different character voices, and a really dry funny sense of humor from Billie herself !
Some very stirring moments in the book that makes you pause and take it in again.
Sure wished she did some more audible books, because Joolz has amazing talent for this sort of thing !
