Publisher's summary

Edgar Award-winner Rick Riordan captures San Antonio at its grittiest with his mysteries featuring Jackson "Tres" Navarre - unlicensed P.I., Tai Chi master, and imbiber of Big Red cream soda laced with tequila.

It’s been a decade since his father was murdered and Tres left town. But he’s got an itch that can only be scratched by looking for answers. Returning to San Antonio with his enchilada-eating cat, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the Mafia and dirty politicians. It isn’t long before Tres stirs up more trouble than he can handle and finds himself the target of ill-willed bullets.

Crack another case with Tres Navarre.

It's the small things

Overall, the story was interesting and kept my attention. But there is one think I remember most about this audiobook. Mr. Stechschulte kept pronouncing "javelina" with a "j" instead of an "h". Now, maybe that's the way they say it in Texas, but it's not the way we say it in Arizona. You may be thinking that word wouldn't come up much in this book, but it did quite a few times. Each time it was like nails down a chalkboard.

Great story!

I grabbed this book because I had listened to some other books by the narrator. Since I enjoyed detective novels and since I'm from Texas I figured this would be a good choice. Like any first book in a series it takes a little bit to get going, but this one isn't too bad. We get into some action right on the outset. Great story!

However like another reviewer has said, sometimes it can be a bit tricky to get over the mispronunciations. For most people they won't notice, but being someone who lives in Texas it seemed to throw me off a bit every time. Otherwise a great listen.

Love Rick Riordan

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Good story and characters, and although this is the first in the series, the books keep getting better.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tres, the lead character, because he is so unconventional. Tai Chi master, PHD from Berkeley, a Texas boy, and a great bartender! Weird, but it works!

What about Tom Stechschulte’s performance did you like?

His voice is great, and the way he performs the characters

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had a few lol moments.

Any additional comments?

As stated above, I love Rick Riordan. This is definitely more adult in nature than the Kane Chronicles or the Percy Jackson books. He knows how to write to a target age group/audience, and be relevant to that group.

Love It!

Would you listen to Big Red Tequila again? Why?

Yes, It was written well and fun. Good story.

Any additional comments?

I love this author. He reminds me of Robert B Parker. One of my favorites, I will miss his books. I am happy to know I can still listen to books close to his.

Too many characters

What did you like best about Big Red Tequila? What did you like least?

Since I am from San Antonio, I could visualize the places described in the book. There were too many characters and much of the book was spend developing them. This took away from the actual story line.

Got this because of narrator

Wanted some mindless listening and the story more than delivered on the mindless but I enjoyed the narrators performance.

Not my cup of tea.

What disappointed you about Big Red Tequila?

There was way to much cursing and bad language. In fact, I would not have gotten it if I had known.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Raising Dragons... Maybe.

Did Tom Stechschulte do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I did like his voice acting and he did very well portraying the different male characters.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Excitement for the first few minutes until the swearing started then I was VERY disappointed.

Any additional comments?

I love Rick Riordan's stories and the unique way he has with words and describing things. I will not be reading the rest of this series but I have read everything else he has done. I may listen to other books read by Tom Stechschulte though.

LEARN HOW TO PRONOUCE WORDS

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

HE COULD HAVE LEARNED HOW TO PRONOUCE THE WORDS CORRECTLY. IF YOU ARE READING A BOOK YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT HOW THAT PART OF COUNTRY PRONOUNCES WORDS.

Any additional comments?

I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THE AUTHOR WENT TO ALOT OF TIME TO RESEARCH THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO BUT THEN THE NARRATOR REALLY BRUTALIZED SOME OF THE WORDS IN THE BOOK.

Mispronunciation Bugaboo

Overall narrator was very good, but I do not understand why in so many audio books the narrator mispronounces so many words-particularly place names-but in this case javalina-a wild pig---Please! this is HAV-A-LINA---a Spanish word where the J is pronounced like an H! You know-JOSE!
This word was used so many times that the mispronunciation drove me crazy--especially since I grew up in Texas where many Spanish words are commonly used in daily life.
Otherwise, good listen---this has just become my pet peeve recently as I hear these blunders more and more on audio books.

A lot of characters to introduce

So, this book may have gotten a higher rating if I had listened to it all in one sitting versus a little bit each day. The book has a lot of characters and some of them have very few scenes. It was hard to keep up with all the players in this book.

Overall, I did like the story and the mystery. I love cold case stories and this one had plenty of twist and turns to keep you guessing. I wasn’t thrilled with the character of Lily and couldn’t see why Tres was interested in her. Tres is a good character and I loved some of the supporting characters. It will be interesting to see who makes it into the next book. As a Texan, the author laid out the geography well and the language.

The narrator is one I usually love but there were too many Texas words that he just didn’t pronounce correctly.
