What did you love best about Bad Debts?

Jack Irish is a great character and great to read a book set in Australia

What other book might you compare Bad Debts to and why?

It is like an Australian version of the Prey series by John Sandford.

Have you listened to any of Marco Chiappi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

First time for Chiappi, really enjoyed his performance. Easy to follow characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Book built nicely without any silly or over the top twists

    Any additional comments?

Peter Temple is a great author - check out the Broken Shore, one of my all time favourites

"The narrator made me love listening"
What did you love best about Bad Debts?

The characters and the narrator's timing, timbre and accent.

What could Peter Temple have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

more complex, less obvious plot; the reviewers that say it was disjointed confuse me -- yes it moved from different settings and characters but it was too obvious for me. Redeemed again by the read aloud and the characters.

Which character – as performed by Marco Chiappi – was your favorite?

    Jack

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Horses, houses and debts.

    "Got a new favorite lawyer"

Jack Irish, criminal lawyer, cabinet maker and horseracing fanatic, gets a call from the past, several in fact. If he’d only pick up his messages more often. An old client, one he doesn’t remember, wants to talk. Danny Mckillop is dead by the time Jack finds him.

The McKillop case is one from Jack’s drinking days and as he looks into the matter, guilt over having failed to represent the man properly, to question the confession, takes root and won’t let go.

This was a complex plot easily told. Jack Irish, who’s not Irish at all, delivers as a rough and tumble lawyer out running down the cold trail of a case no one wants dragged into the light. Great action and language, the secondary characters come to life. Very enjoyable story.

    "I like Jack!"

This was a bit slow in the first half but first books in a series can do that. The rest of it was good and I like Jack Irish. I had a bit of trouble with the slang but I got the gist of it. I'll read another.

    Loved the narrators voice.

"Just couldn't get into this book."

I tried twice to listen to this book but without success. I think maybe it's more of a man's book.

Not a writer, a writer wannabe, editor, lit maj, or pretend literary critic. Just an avid reader/listener. My ratings are opinion only.

Weak story but great characters. I will defintely give Jack another shot and can only hope the story will live up to his character.

    "not up to Temple's usual"

This book just did not grab my interest as other Temple books have done. the performance was good, but the story seemed a bit disjointed and just not engaging. Go for "The Broken Shore" instead.

    "Way Down Under"
Where does Bad Debts rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    First in the genre.

Have you listened to any of Marco Chiappi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All Jack Irish series performances were terrific.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely. Listening again to catch what I missed.

    Any additional comments?

Some may be put off by the profanity but it is the vernacular used in the real world.

    "Bit bogan"

An alright story I suppose and some of the places were significant to me but it just came across as very bogan and the bad language was somewhat gratuitous (getting prudish in my old age). If there is nothing else on offer I might listen to another Peter Temple but wont be rushing to read the entire series.
