Publisher's summary

Frederick Forsyth is back with a Avenger! A heart-stopping thriller of murder, intrigue, deception, and revenge

Attorney Calvin Dexter hangs his shingle in a quiet New Jersey town, has a reasonably successful practice, and takes the hills strong while triathlon training. But Dexter is no ordinary lawyer. On Sundays, he reads the paper and shuffles around his dark, empty house, trying to forget about a life he has lost forever.

Until, of course, Dexter reads something in the papers that sends him the necessary signal. Until one of the handful who know of Dexter's other life tries to contact him. For in a world that has forgotten right and wrong, few can settle a score like Cal Dexter can.

But the game is changing, and this time CIA agent Kevin McBride must find a way to stop Dexter before his quest for vengeance throws the world into chaos.

A real thriller

A great thriller I learned much about Viet Nam and the Balkan wars. The protagonist Cal Dexter has taken the lessons he learned in the jungles an tunnels of Viet Nam and has adapted them into skills he uses to help bring evil people to justice. Zilic is the embodiment of sadistic evil, a criminal who has brutally murdered an idealistic aide worker in the midst of the Balkan wars. Dexter must use all his cunning and skills in an effort to bring Zilic to justice. Not only is he working against this evildoer and his henchman but he must also outwit the CIA who want Zilic for their own reasons. The surprise twist of an ending will make you smile.
Forsyth's prose is only OK but his research is meticulous and he builds his story carefully and meticulously. The narrator Eric Conger is OK somewhat dull initially but he seemed to grow into the role. I enjoyed this audiobook thoroughly.

Forsyth is the planet's best storyteller.

Forsyth's research and prose are unmatched in modern fiction. He works very hard at drawing the reader/listener into the story and making it come alive. Yet, he avoids the mental drubbing with minute detail so common these days.

The story was good, the performance excellent and the prose outstanding.

Brilliantly plotted and written.

What a fine storyteller Forsyth is. Never a dull moment and fully satisfying as a listening experience. One of the best.

A whirlwind history tour with excitment to boot

I haven't read Forsyth in quite a while (over a decade) and as such had forgotten how much detail he pours into his books (either that, or he's changed his style a lot!). He weaves so much history into the telling of this story, that on occasion I found myself saying outloud..."how about getting back to the story!". None the less, the odd times when I felt I was listening to a history professor were countered by an overall good story that kept me guessing and interested to the end.
