I am hooked

I am listening to the books in order, of course, and am hooked. Love the characters, love the storyline, love mixing in the Indian culture and mysticism, the description of the territory makes me want to visit (except in the winter). The characters are real to me. Not many books have characters who are as real as those in this series.

The narration is equal to the writing. I select books from a list of books he does. Have not been disappointed yet.

My Prayer Review

This may appear again now and then.

Dear God: Please let this man write another book soon and please let me be here to listen to it. I can't say something like 'even his worst book is good' because I can't think of anything he's done that is worse than anything else.

Before I post this list I have to say that Sandford, Parker and MacDonald are EXTRA special. And Richard Ferrone as John Sandford's voice is an amazing match. Like George Guidall with Craig Johnson and pretty much anything George reads.

Robert B. Parker lived in this space for me as did John D. MacDonald. Currently, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, John Hart, Craig Johnson, John Lescroart, William Kent Krueger Ridley Pearson ,and Jonathan Kellerman. Some others are really good but these guys have something special. If you are into mystery-thrillers I just gave you a back catalog I wish I could have...but I HAVE had it and it is an incredible treasure. I stopped going to libraries and swap places just so I can encourage these guys by sending them money. Please enjoy.
P.S. Adding Brian Freeman.

Touch and Go

The path led down many roads. He got his daughter married and solved the crime. The crime really solved itself. He's never right about things at first. We meet new people and old ones are brought back.

I'm a Walt Longmire Fan

If you could sum up As the Crow Flies in three words, what would they be?

Continues the saga.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well the is Walt, but without the supporting cast of Henry Standing-Bear and Lola . . .

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

George never disappointa

I figured it out way too early in the book.

Would you try another book from Craig Johnson and/or George Guidall?

I would definitely try another book by Craig Johnson and ANY book narrated by George Guidall. George Guidall's performance NEVER disappoints.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting aspect of the story was the manner and circumstance in which the victim died.

The least interesting and most predictable aspect was when Sheriff Walt Longmire (a.k.a. "the white guy") was invited to participate in a peyote ceremony. Then the white guy along with his native sidekick (acting as babysitter) has a vision that most Natives never experience. Of course the vision holds answers to the mystery that could not have been introduced into the story through logic and deduction.

I also get a little tired of all the achingly beautiful women characters. The men are not devastatingly handsome, they are grizzled, have interesting, checkered pasts and I love them: Walt and his "fat ass", Lucien's 90 year-old, one-legged badass self, large Brandon White Buffalo, and legless Lonnie Little Bird ("Yes, it is so.").

Lolo Long is the native version of Vic, angry, beautiful, statuesque, tough. A supermodel in a cop uniform. Vic is described as beautiful, but she's interesting because of her filthy mouth, her cop background, and her no BS take on, well, EVERYTHING. I want more character from the women, not pouting perfection, flashing (jasper/tawny/glint of gold) eyes, and a drop of sweat (just a drop) nestled near the base of their dainty throats.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

Henry Standing Bear. George Guidall nails the character, I can't watch the TV show because Lou Diamond Phillips doesn't come close to Henry Standing Bear as performed by George Guidall.

Did As the Crow Flies inspire you to do anything?

I love the Walt Longmire books because they take place in the high plains. I moved to the high plains seven years ago and love the feel of the old west and the ancient land. After reading the books, I have greater curiosity about where I live and I want to explore the history of these unique small towns. I actually happened upon Longmire Days by accident. I was looking for a weekend trip, my daughter mentioned the haunted Occidental Hotel in Buffalo, WY and a hike in the Bighorn Mountains. When we drove into town and I saw The Busy Bee Cafe, it dawned on me, "HEY, THIS IS DURANT, WYOMING!" I came back the next weekend for Longmire Days. Lots of fun!

Any additional comments?

I wish I loved the TV show. I like the casting for Walt and Vic (she could be sassier, more like her character in the book). Branch isn't really a character in the books, but Bailey Chase's development of Branch fits nicely. I was disappointed when Lucien's character was introduced into the show, but I do realize that if all the characters weren't younger in the TV series, it wouldn't have much of a run. Still and all, I wish the TV show reflected the books more. The episodes seem to be a blending of several stories, hazy, foggy and floating-- not crisp and snappy. The TV show doesn't have the same authenticity as the books.

Sheriff Longmire gets into many interesting situations. The characters are fascinating with many different facets. The narration is fantastic. I enjoyed this story.

This was a great book to listen to

This was a great book to listen to. This is my first Longmire and I will be listening to the rest of the series. Walt Longmire is a Sheriff and ex Vietnam Veteran. His laconic character and approach to investigations, and life in general, are humorous and endearing, making it a fun book to listen to. George Guidall is the perfect narrator for this character and series. I put this book in the top tier in my library and expect the rest of the series to reside there.
