This was a little slow in places but I like the main character, Cordelia Gray. I would read more stories with her in them.
"A great treat"
Marvellous characterization and more ambiguous than the simplistic 'the good triumph and the bad are punished'. Thoroughly enjoyable.
"An unsuitable job for a woman"
A good, entertaining and interesting book. The heroine is appealing and the plot clever. I'll listen to the next in the series. Good holiday listening.
"Vintage P D James"
I very much enjoyed listening to this - the tension is kept up throughout, there are plenty of plot twists, the characters are intriguing, and the explanation is just about believable. These days, it comes as a slight shock when illegal handguns are regarded with relative insouciance, but this book was published in 1972 - very different times!
I sort of suspected the culprit right from the start, although it did keep me guessing. Would all those characters really have interfered with a dead body the way they did? Not convinced about that.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. The story is well crafted - as one would expect from such a respected author - highly recommended.
