Publisher's Summary

Jessica Nagoshi, the beautiful heiress to her father's billion-dollar empire, is being groomed, along with her brother Peter, to take control of Nagoshi Inc. That is, until she is brutally murdered in the greenhouse of her father's extensive Wellesley estate.

Jessica was in her third year pre-law at the prestigious Deane University, and the police enter the hallowed halls of the most expensive college in America to begin their investigation.

Boston criminal defence attorney David Cavanaugh is thrust into this high-society case when James Matheson, a wealthy, connected, but unaffected law student is arrested for Jessica's murder. For in James he sees traces of his younger self - Matheson is dedicated, ambitious, but still idealistic enough to believe that justice will always prevail.

From the outset David is hampered by unspoken alliances, corporate malpractice, love, lust, and a disastrous misplace of trust that will leave his case in tatters. But in the end, nothing can prepare him for the truth - and the diabolical lengths some will go to preserve their life of privilege.

    "Good? .... absolutely fantastic!"

It took me 2 days to get through this 18 hour book. I read reviews where people say "I couldn't put it down" and so on and I think, yeah right, but this I couldn't put down, exciting, well written and the plot ... simply terrific. One of the top 3 most exciting books I have ever read/listened to, and I listen to app. 5 audiobooks a month for the past 3 years...
Musread it if you're into thrillers/detectives and well thought through plots.

    "Discovery for me"

Had not listened to any Sydney Bauer novels prior to Alibi. Now I'm scouring Audible for additional titles. Surprisingly good listen made more so by Bill Ten Eyck's narration.
Good plot with complex characters clearly recognizable during the telling. Not your usual, tidily wrapped up conclusion. I enjoyed this novel and narrator planning to download additional Bauer novels.
Give it a try. You, too, may be pleasantly surprised.

    "Who Did the Fact Checking?"

It was obvious that the author was not American. He knows little about US legal education and it pervades the novel. The underlying story is somewhat interesting, but the complete misunderstanding about the US legal system made this an irritating read/listen.

    "Worst book ever."
What would have made Alibi better?

If I could have gotten past the narrator I might have lasted long enough to know what it was about. I stopped listening after suffering through 25 minutes.

How could the performance have been better?

Get someone else to do the performance.

    "ALIBI"

My first experience listening to a Sydney Bauer novel and I really enjoyed it.
It took me a little time to get used to the narrator his voice and speed irrated me initally, but then I got used to it, and the different characters he portrayed were really good.
The storyline was excellent and I liked the characters there was no time to be bored as the story moved on quickly .
I will read/listen to more by this author.

    "highly entertaining"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Entertaining and very well read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Alibi?

I particularly loved the narrator. His vocal skills are superb. The council for the prosecution was a dead ringer for Jack Nicholson and there was a Woody Allen impression thrown in somewhere too. Highly entertaining and thoroughly ridiculous plot line. Great!

What does Bill Ten Eyck bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He totally brought this story to life. Will look out for other stuff he reads now.

Would you listen to Alibi again? Why?

No - it was a bit predictable.

    Any additional comments?

Not a bad listen when driving in the car - but sometimes slow and annoying.

"A truly dreadful book and even worse performance."
Would you try another book written by Sydney Bauer or narrated by Bill Ten Eyck?

    No.

What could Sydney Bauer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not just full of cliches, but a verbal tic of having double adjectives, almost always irrelevant, for nouns of just about any sort; tedious beyond belief. The plot was tired and hackneyed. Altogether, a terrible experience.

Would you be willing to try another one of Bill Ten Eyck’s performances?

This is by far the worst reader I've ever encountered. He sounds continually angry, and is virtually spitting out the words, regardless of the mood of the passage he's reading. He really does not belong in audible's catalog.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom and frustration.

    "Assault on the Ears"

I am compelled to write this review on the awful narrator alone.
I find these books reasonable reading but not fantastic. They are normally a useful distraction however I totally object to having my ear-drums and hearing assaulted. This narrator is horrendeous. Normal listening volume for me (headphones) is around 8 or 9, I had to turn this idiot down to 3. But far worse than that is his propensity to actually SHOUT half of his script causing pain and quite serious irritation. Not just softly shout but screeching at you. This 'Bill' has no skills when it comes to understanding a listener needs. His 'character' attempts are irritating, grating on the ears and downright annoying. I cannot explain strongly enough that this DESTROYS any enjoyment of the book, to have someone screaming stupid accents in your ears. I put up with 12 hours of it but cannot bare to have my hearing and mood ruined anymore. I simply cannot finish the book due to the narrator. Bill, get another job!
