Penelope Keith - who starred as Agatha Raisin in the popular BBC Radio 4 series - reads M. C. Beaton’s entertaining murder mystery.
During the grey days of early December, Agatha is obsessed by only two things: Christmas, and her ex, James Lacey. Although she says she feels nothing for James now, she’s sure that planning the perfect Dickensian Christmas for all her friends will somehow reanimate her love.
Even the murder of Mrs Tamworthy, poisoned with hemlock at the local manor house, does little to distract Agatha from organizing her perfect yuletide celebrations. Yet poor Mrs Tamworthy had written to Agatha, telling her that someone wanted to see her dead before the year was out. Slightly guiltily, Agatha sets out to solve the case with the help of a new recruit, young Toni Gilmour. But as the days march closer to the 25th, Agatha knows she must catch the murderer - because nothing will stop her having her perfect day!
Penelope Keith is probably best known for her roles in To the Manor Born and The Good Life. Her theatre performances include roles in Star Quality, Mrs Warren’s Profession, and Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit. She has received several BAFTA awards and has been awarded an OBE.

"A lightweight and enjoyable listen."
This book is similar to the other Agatha Raisin adventures. The books are not challenging or emotionally heavy. If you like Miss Marple or Rosemary and Thyme type stories then these are for you. They make for a comfortable bed-time listen.
This was my first Agatha Raisin book, as I had never heard of the writer and series until recently.
The Narrator is a perfect fit for the character, and she does a very good job.
Overall the story is OK, nothing special, with a main character that has her flaws and I imagine would grow on you if you followed the series.
Its fairly short so it gets to the point but therefore is not too involving. Its fairly easy listening and an ok story if you like something not too gritty or dark and are just after some light entertainment, but there are some parts that meander and take on a bit of a soap opera feel.
There are a couple of views that are slightly outdated, such as thinking that if a woman gets married she would stop working, but there are only a couple of moments like this.
Enjoyable if you like this type of book, but forgettable.
"Penelope Keith is superb in this seasonal tale."
This is a well constructed story with a good nod to the classic murder mystery fiction of the likes of Agatha Christie. The modern elements are entertaining and ring true. Top this with the superb Penelope Keith and this is a true Christmas cracker. Thanks audible.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Its a good mystery, very well read and easy listening. Miss Raisen is a rather unusual character, her reactions to situations are so demonstrative, the story never lulls, its a good yarn all the way. I will definitely get another M C Beaton. Thank you Audible , this was one of your Christmas treats....Merry Christmas to all my fellow Audiblers.
Another five star performance. Love the Agatha raisin character. Never disappoints. Have listened to the whole series available. Look forward to more on audible.
"Great Detective Story"
What a great, light, breezy, festive story. Brilliantly read, with that ever seductive voice of Penelope Keith. Almost as if there are several stories (but as with all good detective stories that is how it is), going on at the same time. This is my first Agatha Raisen story and will definitely not be my last - I am now frantically searching for the first one in the series to add to the wish list. Will, no doubt be back with more reviews and so looking forward to listening to more.
"Totally predictable, annoying narrative"
Maybe a fan of Agatha Christie, or a total fan of Penelope Keith.
I'm sorry to say I wouldn't, unless it was a cast rather than just a narrative. I've listened to Agatha Raisin on the radio, which was a drama rather than a reading and enjoyed that.
Penelope's voice characterisation was really annoying.
These books are a great read when you want an easy read without too much Brain input. All much the same format, but fun nonetheless.
"I love these books"
I have previously read a few of these books so thought I would try an audiobook. It is well read and the storyline is just as good as in previous books. A good book that is not dark or depressing, it is comical in some places - just the tonic for escaping the reality of life for a bit.
"Another Mystery for Agatha!"
Agatha Rasin tries to create her perfect Christmas but as usual things conspire to turn out rather differently. Not her best story but still good fun
