Publisher's summary

For years, ex–Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America’s enemies at every turn. And then...news of a potentially devastating coalition: What if two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States were to form an unholy alliance? The Taliban is trying to exploit a Mexican drug cartel to which they supply opium as a means to bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America. In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U.S.–Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

Not up to his former standards.

Found this book to really be a drag. Too many flashbacks, jumped around and hard to keep track of just what was going on. If they should ever make a movie, I sure would like to have guns, ammo and explosives contract. Evidently the main guy does not understand that "stuff" happens and seems to want to carry the a lot of blame for everything. Actually I fell asleep several times, just could not get involved with it.

Credit-worthy action with a great lead character

I've never read a Tom Clancy novel and think I am now a big fan. This book pulls absolutely no punches and the death toll is high but it's a great read.

A character named Moore is an ex-Navy Seal gathering terrorist intelligence when he finds his way to Mexico to take down a major drug cartel leader. Both stories and a host of characters intertwine masterfully as we deal with loner Moore who's bad luck is everyone who surrounds themselves with him seem to die off.

There aren't many plot secrets here, just action, reaction and the results afterward. The plot is strong, the writing stronger and I appreciated how the book didn't end with a slapped together happy ending.

one of his best

Blew my mind, action at every turn. Wonderfully narrated by Steven Weber who gave life to Tom Clancey's words. I love Tom Clancy Novels and this to me was one of his best with heart pounding action and many twists.

Not About The Campus

Not sure who decided that this was a campus book, but it was very misleading. It wasn't until the end of the book when a familiar character finally showed up.
Too many random flashbacks in the middle of gunfights.

Unfortunately troubling

Tom Clancy's writing in "Against All Enemies" takes me back to "The Hunt for Red October": a reasonably plausible storyline, a heroic protagonist (but not to the point of unbelievable super heroism), and a gripping pace. Though the likely outcome is predictable very early in the book and the desire for (and delivery of) a positive (relative to alternative scenarios) resolution of the story is provided without much disguise, I enjoyed the story and will likely ponder the issues Clancy raises regarding protecting/watching our southern boundaries over the next few weeks. This book may bring me back to Clancy.

Complicated

This was really long and complicated
I had to go back and listen to sections multiple times
Might be one of those rare stories that I should have read instead of listened to

Entertaining - Clancy book as expected

Combines seals, drug cartels and terrorism in a fast paced modern novel that is difficult to put down.
Unlike a let of his stories, an unusual number of good guys perish.

An Unholy Combination of Super Villains

What made the experience of listening to Against All Enemies the most enjoyable?

The imagination of threat plots in this series is always breathtaking. The thought of the combination of the Taliban using the drug cartels' access to smuggle terrorist into America is chilling. As always, there is plenty of well written action in a tight storyline.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Against All Enemies?

Without spoiling the story, the airport segments were mesmerizing and terrifying.

What about Steven Weber’s performance did you like?

The narrator does an excellent job of presenting a vast cast of characters so that they are individually recognizable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

"Moved" is the wrong word for a Clancey novel. There are any number of suspenseful " Oh #@&%, how are they going to stop that?" moments.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best books in the Clancey series in a while.
