Publisher's summary

For years, ex–Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America’s enemies at every turn. And then...news of a potentially devastating coalition: What if two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States were to form an unholy alliance? The Taliban is trying to exploit a Mexican drug cartel to which they supply opium as a means to bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America. In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U.S.–Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

Entertaining but not Award Winning

Like so much that Tom Clancy writes, it is entertaining, but it doesn't exactly qualify as an amazing piece of literature.

In Against All Enemies, various threads are woven together. Mexican drug cartels, Taliban terrorists and American government officials form a complex menagerie of infighting, conspiracy, and corruption that unfortunately abandons the realm of believability on more than one occasion.

Moving along at a solid pace through the novels entire length, I never felt the story dragging along, but once the terrorist plot was identified the conspiracy continued to develop even though the outcome became predictable.

If you are a Clancy fan this should be enjoyable, but it's not likely to be memorable upon it's conclusion.

Plot is timely

Fast paced and well written. Characters are well-developed and not without flaws. Narration clear and at times emotional

Good but not great Clancy

Clancey still has Ryan and Clark but he merged them together into one character named Moore. Having one guy do everything makes this read more like a James Bond novel. It needed more character development, and the kind of technical detail that makes Clancy books worth reading.

an insult to Clancy's memory

An unbelievable mish mosh of Muslim terrorists and Mexican drug cartels with unidimensional characters and government heroes. The body count exceeds any Shakespeare tragedy. The Clancy heirs must really be hard up for money to allow this to be published

Enjoyable Listening

Listened to this book at work, it seemed to start slowly but eventually I was looking forward to getting further into it. Doesnt seem to drag out like some books that are this long. I would recommend it if you are fan of Clancy.

A good listen but not Clancy/Telep's finest hour.

This book has recieved some pretty negative reviews, mainly due to the apparent shift from Clancy's authorship, but also in part due to another type of story. Whereas in the past the focus of the action has been on the political interplay between organisations of the military industrial system,(with the possible exception of R6 and Without Remorse) this novel focuses on speculation of what a JTF would face if it were played off against a cartel.

This speculation is inherently weakened by the lack of political motivators for the storyline ( by which I mean the characters unquestioningly following orders to protect the country, and everyone is always on side in the chain of bureaucracy). This causes the flow to be unbroken, with no spectacular twists, divergent goals, nor character motivators for emotional connection to the reader... with the exception of the main character.

An example of this is that when a secondary character on the good guys team dies, there is little emotional attachment as there was when the Caruso twin's lost Brian, or when Rainbow was ambushed in R6, etc, etc.

In spite of these inherent story weaknesses, there is a good storyline spinning from the "What if" scenario's developed in the book, and if you give it a chance, and are willing to sit through the seemingly interminable introductory hour and a half of unrelated action and flashbacks of a new character, you will eventually be rewarded by some easter-eggs related to the main Jack Ryan chain of books.

SO... all in all, a good listen, but not Clancy/Telep's finest hour.

Not Clancy but an OK story once I understood that.

As most of us did, I went into this looking for my next Tom Clancy fix. At first I was sorely disappointed. It is not Tom Clancy at all. He may have had something to do with the production of the book but it was never him. After 4 or 5 hours something changed for me and I stopped thinking about it as a Clancy book. I enjoyed it much more at that point. I'm not going to say it is a great book, but it is at least passably entertaining. I made it through to the end. By this time I had low expectations of the book and those expectations were met or exceeded. This is a book to read but not get too worked up in the details. Speaking directly to Tom Clancy: Thank you for this effort but we are ready for another traditional Tom Clancy novel.

great story, great narrator

I always loved Clancy storage, hopefully they can interweave Moore's character into the overall Jack Ryan universe.

Great Listen

What you’d expect of a Tom Clancy book and expertly read. I liked how this book tied into other earlier Clancy books at the end.
