Publisher's summary

For years, ex–Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America’s enemies at every turn. And then...news of a potentially devastating coalition: What if two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States were to form an unholy alliance? The Taliban is trying to exploit a Mexican drug cartel to which they supply opium as a means to bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America. In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U.S.–Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

Plot is timely

Fast paced and well written. Characters are well-developed and not without flaws. Narration clear and at times emotional

Oh yea

I"m a big Clancy fan and have to say i love the length of every book he as written. In my opinion if you have read his other books you would now i hope be used to his great detail about everything. I really like how he makes his main characters feel like they could be someone you know our would like to meet as a friend of course.

This is No Jack Ryan novel

I recall staying up all night reading the latest spy thrillers from Tom Clancy. His last two novels I regret are not of the same caliber. I was somewhat disappointed by this novel. The best part is the last quarter of the book. I didn't find Steven Weber to be a captivating narrator. I almost stop listening at one point.
If you want suspense and action stick with Vince Flynn novels.
Sorry Tom.

Could have been good, but ....

Story starts with too many story arcs and a massive waste of space.
As soon as you get a grip on who and what the character is he/she is killed.
No one survives the story other than the 'hero' who self loathes himself all through the book to the point that you just skip ahead in attempts to avoid listening to it all over again...
The two story arcs that makes up the actual story is pretty good, but weeding out the rest of the junk is just too painful.

Would be better as half the book

Maxwell Moore was a fairly likable character with an interesting biography and was, for the most part, believable and not overblown. Other characters were also well written. Some of the scenes were very good and there were some interesting and well-described situations. Unfortunately, these good parts were often separated by a lot of unnecessary details and seemingly unconnected side stories. If I had not been a captive audience on a long car trip, I'm not sure that I would have listened to the entire book. In my opinion the book should have been made shorter by about one-third.

2D cutout plot and characters

What did you like best about Against All Enemies? What did you like least?

2D cutout plot and characters, which were not too engaging. The plot feels like a officially sanctioned narrative binding Middle East terrorists an Mexican drug barons (obviously no even mention of "fast and furious"). Characters lived and died, but I could not care less. The book does not feel like Clancy at all. Good narration

Blood and guts...

galore here, and too many "wtf's" to count. The story moves back and forth between Mexico and the Middle East as a former Navy Seal now working for the CIA along with various local and American accomplices attempt to stop a murderous Mexican drug cartel and determine its link to Taliban operatives. The killings, current and in his past, leave Max Moore a brooding, remorseful guy who nonetheless is up to the task of rounding up the bad guys. The details leading up to the ultimate resolution to the novel were intriguing but overly complex and told in violent detail. The book became gripping for me only when the two major plotlines came to a head and there was definitive action.
I thought Steven Weber did a good job with the various accents, working with a multitude of characters, and he kept things moving at a good pace. I liked this book but didn't love it, thus three stars.

Slow starting but gets rolling and good

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It is a pretty good listen once things are set in place

If you’ve listened to books by Tom Clancy and Peter Telep before, how does this one compare?

Pretty similar to other Tom Clancy works.

What does Steven Weber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Steven Weber does a good job narrating the story.

Any additional comments?

Once the stage is set, which takes a little while, it gets better and better.

Not sure about this

Performance was good I just feel the story had the real Tom Clancy feel. I mean it just didn’t flow like the classics and it was hard to track the characters. Maybe it s just me but it wasn’t the best.
