Critic reviews

"A proven master of the British police procedural, Robinson should find a large audience for this gripping, psychologically astute tale." (Publishers Weekly)
"This multilayered novel puts Banks firmly in the upper echelon of British mystery writers." (Library Journal)
"A devilishly good plotter...[Robinson's] characterizations are so subtle that even the psychological profiler is stumped." (New York Times Book Review)

horrible narration

When Katia sounds like catchup the accent looses it's charm. In addition, this narrator seems to feel the need to emote in cutsie ways. I'm going to suggest through the books he narrates, but I will not do so quietly!

I started with Dan Brown so I'm spoiled

I must admit that I've been fortunate enough to start with some of the cream of the crop prior to this book so it had some tough acts to follow (Grisham, Dan Brown). I do agree that this narrator was quite bad. It took me at least an hour to fight the feeling to turn this book off and escape from this man's grindingly annoying accent. But, after awhile you adjust and the story sucks you in. I must warn that there is quite a bit of violent and sexual descriptions in this book, but, for me, that made it more real and I loved the police investigation knowledge and details that this author brought to this book. It was a good story overall, but the narrator seems like he is trying his best to make you lose interest with his very dry, jumbled and sometimes tough to understand for Americans voice. Definitely worth the try.

Great book … the narration makes it a difficult listen

Love the depth of the stories, this one was particularly good; however I barely made it through because of the narration. The characters are not well differentiated my voice, and I have a hard time believing that all the people in the Dales sound quite this whiny.

Boring story. Awful Narrator.

Probably no one could have brought this boring, repetitive and obvious story to life but the narrator here is the worst I?ve ever encountered in an audio book. The reader is so intent on affecting a broad Yorkshire accent that he pays no attention to character or content. All his women characters whine, all his male characters bark gruffly, all the time, no matter what they are saying. Avoid this one.

Ruined by the narrator

Aftermath is a good book but the narration by Ron Keith spoiled it for me. Most of the time he sounded like he had a head cold and his accents were terrible. A big disappointment.

Skip this narrator

Everything you have read about the tedious, whining narration is true. Buy this in paperback and use your credits for something else.

Godawful nasty story

Imagine being the kind of person who cooks up a gruff bellowing male lead and the repellent crimes AND a bunch of whiny women, some of whom are gaga for Mr Gruffnbellow

Reader kept me from buying this book

I can listen to a wide variety of readers. But this reader put me off to the point where I refused to get this book by one of my favorite authors. It wasn't even the voices of the characters that I found so objectionable, but his normal reading voice that seemed to attempt to infuse every word with intrigue. Some listerners may like that, but I can't listen to those few readers who do this. It's like overacting, and ruins the story for me.

Appalling narration

This is a perfect example of how a good book can be ruined by almost unbelievably awful narration.
