Publisher's summary

Two from the master of the legal thriller:

A Time to Kill:
The life of a 10-year-old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime, until her father acquires an assault rifle and takes justice into his own outraged hands.

For 10 days, with burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spreading through the streets of Clanton, Mississippi, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jack Brigance struggles to save his client's life...and then his own.

The King of Torts:
When Clay Carter of the public defender's office reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit D.C. every week. But as he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession's newest king of torts.

Classics

A Time To Kill was amazing!! I loved the movie and loved the book!!

The King of Torts was longer than it needed to be and I lost interest multiple times.

Michael Beck is a genius narrator.

ATTK - awesome story - TKOT - unexpectedly great

ATTK - as most have detailed - this is a great book. The narrator is fabulous and gives a good variety of voices. The story flows well and the ending is classic Grisham.

TKOT - cool story. I actually found myself drawn into this one a bit more because of the allure of fast money.

Overall -well worth 1 credit!!

Enjoyed, but not my absolute favorite..

Michael Beck was, as usual, perfect, and the writing was excellent, typical Grisham. That it is not my favorite is mostly on me...I'm not wild about books, movies or shows where the protagonist ain't all that "pro". 😉 Frankly I found Clay Carter to be severely lacking in the human being department....greedy and grabby without much thought beyond what he wants. I get that that is probably the point of the story....I just didn't like him.

A good read.... listen!

I love how the two books are combined. What a value, especially with such a captivating author.

Great novels by. Master

As a criminal defense lawyer I know a good story that’s based in reality. These two fit the bill. Enjoy

I loved the twists

I loved the story, how it made me despise and yet love the same characters. The twists in the story kept it fresh beginning to end.

The narrator read it well and enhanced rather than detracted from the story.

always a pleasure

Very clever, not a happy ending but you had to know it would not be. Love all Grishams books. Would recommend it to anyone. Looking forward to new novel, so get to work 😀. Will be waiting patiently.

story plot was interesting. I am a law but didn't understand the SEC violations relating to insider trading.

The Best ... And the Not So Much

A Time to Kill is REAL Grisham. It's a good story that makes one think about his position on important issues ... and then re-think it. I don't always arrive at the same conclusions the author leads his readers to, but I do appreciate the exercise. Michael Beck did a masterful job of bringing this tale to life.
The King of Torts is such a letdown that it's hard to believe Grisham actually wrote it. Please tell me he didn't! The dialogue is blah, blah, blah. The characters are just blah. The only redeeming quality is Beck's narration.
