Jerome Burnel was once a hero. He intervened to prevent multiple killings and in doing so damned himself. His life was torn apart. He was imprisoned, brutalized.
But in his final days, with the hunters circling, he tells his story to private detective Charlie Parker. He speaks of the girl who was marked for death but was saved; of the ones who tormented him and an entity that hides in a ruined stockade.
Parker is not like other men. He died and was reborn. He is ready to wage war. Now he will descend upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut and face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation and murder. All in the name of the being they serve. All in the name of the Dead King.

"John Connolly at his best"
I have been a fan of John Connolly since I read his first book. His Charlie Parker novels never fail to keep your interest with interesting plots, believable characters and fascinating background information. They are crime fiction at its best and I love the darker elements which are strung through the plots. This latest book does not disappoint and upholds the tradition of the series. I would recommend this book to anyone (along with the rest of the series) who likes a good well thought out and well written book, which keeps you on the edge of your seat, and just when you think you have things sorted, twists and gets you going again. This is an exceptional book, in an exceptional series.
If you haven't read Charlie Parker books you don't know what you're missing! Can't wait for the next one!
"Need to read the first in series!"
This was a decided odd book, there was something about it I did enjoy, but it did get a bit tedious when everything was explained in the minutest detail. I do, however, feel inclined to read some of the earlier books, then I may read this one again.
I really dislike Jeff Harding as a narrator. He tends to read as if he is reading a shopping list, and turns 'up' at the end of each sentence. His female voices REALLY irritate me with their clipped sexy speak!
Overall, I liked the character of Charlie Parker. I found the story confusing in the extreme - but there was something that drew me in.
"Excellent book by the indomitable John!!"
John Connolly is the most amazing writer. I prefer reading to audio for his books, as I have loved his books since I accidentally picked up his first book when it came out and anxiously await his new books. I read the books over and over, but though I like audio, for Mr Connolly's work I need the book. I have in my head what each character sounds like, so listening to a narrator portray Angel, Louis and of course Charlie's voices is strange. This was not written in the first person, as it usually is.
I would highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a well written, brilliantly plotted unusual book. I think to get the best from them, you have to start at the beginning of the Charlie Parker series. It unfolds better than any series I have read, and I am a bibliophile!
"Charlie Parker avenging Angel"
I have enjoyed every book in this series and hope there will be many more
Jeff Harding is simply the best narrator
"Best series out there"
Another great Charlie Parker book and Jeff Harding excellent as always. The best series out and can't wait for the next one
"More Charlie Parker and less of the hereafter"
Red Necks and Ghosts eh.
A shame we didn't get more drama and more Charlie Parker.
One wonders what makes Connolly tick with all the ghosts and living dead stuff.
"Connolly delivers another masterpiece."
Yet again Connolly has kept me enthralled with Charlie Parker. Jeff Harding has narrated to perfection. I recommend anyone who has not yet read or listened to this series to do so. A brilliant blend of suspension and the supernatural, including the charismatic duo of Louie and Angel. As always I am desperate for the next one.
Loved the story as usual, the narration was spot on. The arc is evolving.
"Excellent (except 'female' representation)"
I love John Connolly. I loved this...apart from the 'female' voices which just sound ridiculous and detract from the story. It would have been 5s all round if not for that. I found myself cheering in the car listening alone at one point. Yeah Charlie!!!!
