A Taste for Death | [P. D. James]

A Taste for Death

When the quiet Little Vestry of St. Matthew's Church becomes the blood-soaked scene of a double murder, Scotland Yard Commander Adam Dalgliesh faces an intriguing conundrum: How did an upper-crust Minister come to lie, slit throat to slit throat, next to a neighborhood derelict of the lowest order? Challenged with the investigation of a crime that appears to have endless motives, Dalgliesh explores the sinister web spun around a half-burnt diary and a violet-eyed widow who is pregnant and full of malice.

What the Critics Say

"A superb detective novel....and a gift to all readers." (USA Today)
"Glitters with the high-gloss anxiety of a first-rate detective novel, but it goes beyond that fine achievement to another realm . . . An intricate, compassionate novel." (The Boston Globe)

    "Classic PD James"

Ok, this was a classic PD James book; beautifully written, lots of very nice psychological details; lots and lots of descriptions; and a good mystery to boot. Would have rated it 5 stars but I found myself wanting the author to get on with the story and therefore lighten up on the descriptions and the psychological details. So, what makes this book great, also made it lag. Perhaps I have become impatient lately because of the more americanized detective stories I have been reading as of late. But, if you want to spend a lot of time on one very well written and detailed murder mystery, this is it. Oh, and I liked PD James' little self portrait which she placed in the book towards the end. . . or I wanted to think it was her, anyway.

    "Good PD James book"

Long and slow in parts, but if you like other PD James books, you'll like this one. It's very character driven, which I like. Good story, but the end is a bit unsatisfying and out of nowhere.

    "DON'T WASTE CREDITS"
What would have made A Taste for Death better?

I have GOT to remember to write down this narrator, she has a whinny British accent that drives me insane....hard to keep up with the story when it has such a horrid voice attached. I am wishing there was a refund on my credits when something is so horrid....I listen to several audios a week and never have I had such a hard time listening - wasted 2 credits and will not be able to go past the first of 3 parts....

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

cannot make it to the ending due to narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Penelope Dellaporta’s performances?

    NO AND OH HELL NO

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    another narrator would have helped

    Any additional comments?

wasted 2 credits, should have listened to the sample but I have NEVER had this problem before.
