Publisher's Summary

This is the story in which Conan Doyle first unleashed the most famous partnership in the history of criminal detection.

An unmarked corpse, a wedding ring, and a mysterious message scrawled in blood are Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson's only clues as they follow the trail of a man driven to fulfil a terrible oath he swore more than 20 years before.

Clive Merrison stars as Holmes with Michael Williams as Watson in this adventure, part of the unique fully dramatised BBC canon of Conan Doyle's short stories and novels featuring the world-famous sleuth.

    Any additional comments?

Having eagerly read the canon several times, it is really a delight to relax, get cosy with
my cat and a cup of tea and listen to this excellent dramatized version. The actors, both major and minor are excellent, the sound effects take you on location, you experience firsthand the development of friendship and relationships which will march forth in ensuing stories, and all do justice to such a well thought out, complex story.

It opens with two highly unusual deaths in an out of the way place near London, heavy laden with clues if you know what to look for, which Holmes does, but the two police inspectors, Gregson and Lestrade, do not, quite out of their depth. How Doyle ekes out the following up of the clues, finally weaving in the backstory set in of all places, Utah, the then wild frontier, fraught with miracle, patience, love, greedy jealousy and hate, then revenge, is spellbindingly delicious.

These are very well done dramatizations; I shall continue with them.

    "Intro to Sherlock"

I'm a great detective fan and love Basil Rathbone films. I enjoyed the fact this was Sherlock and Dr Watson's first meeting if not a little thin in concept. An easy listen story, the usual deductions - my only comment would be the maniacal Sherlock laughter - odd to say the least...?

"Perfect First Story in this Fabulous Sherlock Collection "

This first story is well produced and perfectly acted throughout with a full cast of some of England's finest actors. Clive Merrsion makes the absolute perfect Radio Sherlock and I would have liked very much to have watched him on film as the pipe smoking cheeky detective; unfortunately this will never be. Clive brings Sherlock alive with his superb wit, eccentricity, vigour, and strength of character. Williams made Watson his own part and works well with Sherlock so we have a great team.

These productions are so good; I bought the Lot! These dramas take you right into the Victorian world of Sherlock Holmes and are an absolute delight to own. We do not tire of listening to these on a regular basis.

If you love your Sherlock, these will fit just fine. When the show is over, you will wish there was more :)

"Excellent opener for the BBC radio dramatisations"

A great entry in the excellent BBC dramatisations of Sherlock Holmes.

Marvellous cast, particularly Holmes & Watson. This series rightly avoids playing Watson down as a character.

Good radio play for long term Sherlock Holmes fans & those just starting to try them.
