Publisher's summary

Alluding to both the Sherlock Holmes canon and the Old Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos, this Hugo Award-winning short story will delight fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H. P. Lovecraft, and of course, Neil Gaiman.

A Study in Emerald draws listeners in through carefully revealed details as a consulting detective and his narrator friend solve the mystery of a murdered German noble. But with its subtle allusions and surprise ending, this mystery hints that the real fun in solving this case lies in imagining all the details that Gaiman doesn't reveal, and challenges listeners to be detectives themselves.

Wow. Just....Wow.

This proves that assumptions can mean nothing. Wow Neil Gaiman, what have you done? So incredible, and intelligent. Sucks you in right away and keeps you throughout, wiith a twist ending that changes everything . A MUST READ for any Sherlock Holmes and/or Neil Gaiman fans!

another fantastic fantasy from Neil Gaiman

nothing beats a Neil Gaiman story for me unless it is also narrated by Neil Gaiman.

Neil Gaiman just keeps winning!

Fun short story. Kept me listening. How Neil is as good a narrator as a writer is anyone’s guess.

The devil is in the details

As Sherlock Holmes would advise, pay attention to every detail, no matter how fine. Enjoy the story. Get from it what you're able.

Gaiman's reading is as wonderful as ever.

The Lovecraftian influence is obvious, but not expected. The plot parallels a Holmes novel with a similar title. The narrator is writing an account of events they witnessed. It all feels very familiar.

I'll rate this one, "There's a mystery afoot and it's up to you to solve it, my friend."

fun!

I admit I'm biased: I love both Holmes stories and Gaiman. Still, this is a great tale, and Gaiman is a great reader.

An Unusual Pleasure

I do not usually like short stories, but in Mr. Gaiman's case they keep me entertained in between full-length novels. A Study in Emerald is no different - Gaiman uses clever clues and interesting plot twists to keep the reader (listener) engaged, and there is a lovely surprise at the end worthy of the author to whom this story is in reference. Hearing Gaiman narrate his own characters is always a pleasure, and while this piece is not as amusing as some of his others, it is still quite brilliant.

A Sherlock Holmes story with a twist.

This short story was true to the tone of the original while introducing several unexpected (and macabre) surprises with the biggest surprise revealed at the end. Loved it! it made me want to go back and listen to the original stories again!

a delight, particularly for those Sherlock fans

Very entertaining, super easy to listen to, easily be done in one sitting. Likely to be more well liked if you're familiar with Sherlock, especially a Study in Scarlett.
