Most families have skeletons in their closets

Moving back into her parents' house with her teenage daughter had not been Georgia Thackery's Plan A. But when she got a job at the local college, it seemed the sensible thing to do. So she settled in and began reconnecting with old friends.

Including Sid. Sid is the Thackery family's skeleton. He's lived in the house as long as Georgia can remember, although no one, including Sid, knows exactly where he came from and how he came to be a skeleton.

Sid walks, he talks, he makes bad jokes, he tries to keep Georgia's dog from considering him a snack. And he manages to persuade Georgia to let him leave the house. But when she takes him to an anime convention disguised as a skeleton, of course he sees a woman who triggers memories of his past.

Now he is determined to find out how he died with Georgia's help. But their investigation may uncover a killer who's still alive and well and bad to the bone.

First in a new mystery series!

"Stimulating mystery with a wise-cracking skeleton"
Who was your favorite character and why?

Georgia Thackery. She's independent, witty, and strong. She loves her daughter and her best friend, Sid, and would do anything to help them.

    Any additional comments?

Very good depiction of academia and all its politics. Very good banter between Sid and Georgia.

    "A Fantasy Mystery"

Sometimes I am in the mood for a "cosy" style mystery. A mystery that has an intriguing plot, likable characters, an interesting setting, a bit of humor, and moves along at a relaxed, steady pace. For me this was that kind of book.

In order to enjoy this book you will need to be able to suspend your disbelief to accept a skeleton who walks, talks, and loses a few bones when he's feeling down, You must also accept that this skeleton (whose name is Sid) has been part of a family for over 30 years.

Main character Georgia Thackery is a college professor, daughter of two college professors. I know almost nothing about the academic world, so this aspect of the story was interesting to me.

Narrator Katina Kalin is excellent. I was never confused about which character was speaking. And I was never distracted by extreme character "voices".

This is a book you can listen to while driving, doing chores, going to sleep, or just relaxing. I found the book to be very entertaining. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

I kept hoping this story would endear itself to me, but it never did.
Hard to believe it was first in a series.

    Story
    "Pleasant, but disjointed cozy mystery"
Would you listen to A Skeleton in the Family again? Why?

No, once was enough. It is a hard story to classify. It's not your typical cozy mystery because one of the main characters is a skeleton. It's not a good paranormal mystery because the "unworldly" aspect of the book is dealt with in a matter of fact manner and with little interest.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The biggest problem was the lack of character development.

The teenaged daughter is just a typical teen. The mom is an adjunct professor whose claim to interest is her constant bemoaning her job choice. Sid, the skeleton, has no memory of his life and only knows what he's read in books. All in all not a great cast.

The mystery is to figure out who Sid had been in life and why he died.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Georgia taking Sid to be analyzed for Sex, age, ethnicity, etc...

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No

"Book is interesting, the reader, not so much"

I wasn't able to finish this book. The reader was lacking. I'm not sure what was wrong, I just couldn't listen to her. I plan to buy the book and read it.

    Story
"A book for someone under the age of 14."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

It depends on whether it's being written for adults or children!

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Another Diana Gabaldon book, probably.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Katina Kalin?

    Depends upon the book.

Do you think A Skeleton in the Family needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Again, if it's being written for children it would make a promising series, but otherwise no.

    Any additional comments?

    A disappointment.

    Story
"a fair mystery by a fair reader"

The story didn't keep my attention & the reader was breathy and difficult to understand. I was able to get through the story but the way things tied together in the end felt forced and lame. It got 3s across the board because I've read and listened to worse, and the narrator actually pronounced words properly. I chose this because I enjoy fun quirky mysteries, but this wasn't that fun, or funny. I might consider trying the second book to see if the story or narration improves, but based on this first in the series, I'm not a fan.

    Story
    "Unexpectedly witty!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The cover caught my attention, the story kept it. I laughed out loud as I drove to and from work.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sid was funny with his 'bad' bone jokes. As the story progressed, I wanted to know more about him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A real skeleton in the closet!

    Any additional comments?

Awaiting the next book in the series!

    "Well read and well written!"

A great escapist novel, for when you don't want to read anything Kevvy that you equally don't want to read anything too stupid. An original murder mystery episode, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
