Publisher's summary

A week's holiday in a luxurious hotel is just what Scotland Yard's Superintendent Duncan Kincaid needs. But his vacation ends dramatically with the discovery of a dead body in the whirlpool bath. Despite a suspicious lack of cooperation from the local constabulary, Kincaid's keen sense of duty won't allow him to ignore the heinous crime, impelling him to send for his enthusiastic young assistant, Sergeant Gemma James. But the stakes are raised significantly when a second murder occurs, and Kincaid and James find themselves locked in a determined hunt for a fiendish felon looking for fresh blood....

Not the best Deborah Crombie effort

The storyline was mediocre and the narration, terrible for my taste. I felt rushed, by the narration. I was disappointed but if I had "read" the book in print, it would be better.

meh, trying too hard

Felt there were too many characters and very indistinguishable. Two dimensional.
Flat performance, not memorable

A share of death

This is the first book in this series. I will listen to every book in the series. Duncan and Gemma worked well together and kept me interested in the story. There is a good storyline. I recommend trying this book . Michael Deehy did a good job narrating this book. If my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Thank you.

Surprised a woman wrote this

I’m halfway through Book 1. The story is fine, but I had to see what sexist man authored it, and was surprised to find the contrary. I know what every woman’s body and face are like, but rarely the men. In what world would an officer of the law walk uninvited into a cottage and sit across from a woman who told him, with physical evidence, that she had been hit and raped, yet he ignores it in pursuit of what time it happened. because of another crime. I’m going to continue to listen, but it getting difficult to hear about a woman’s breast grazing against his arm. Seriously. Gag.

Mixed feelings

I've developed a habit of checking the reviews on Amazon along with those that are here on Audible. Most of the comments were favorable, and since Audible was having a sale, I thought I'd give this author a try. First off, I'd say that it DID hold my interest until the end, however, I found the story to be mediocre. I continued to listen because I wanted to find out who did it. Would I listen to more by this author? Maybe. But I'd save the money and rent from my local library.
For those who are interested, this book contains some language that may be considered offensive, but it's not often - just a sprinkling here & there. No F-bombs, though. Some of the people are having affairs, but it's not described in detail.

An early installment in this great series

This is one of the early books in this terrific series, which I had somehow overlooked reading or listening to. I did not find it as interesting or engaging as the subsequent ones, in which Gemma and Kinkaid are working together more directly, but this certainly provides interesting insights and, as usual, is beautifully narrated.

A good Old Fashioned Mystery

A real page turner. If you like a straight forward mystery this is it. The characters are ok but the story really took up some slack.

Pleasantly surprised.

What did you love best about A Share in Death?

The characters were interesting. I wanted to know more about them. I kept trying to figure out who the antagonist was.

What did you like best about this story?

Like life, many lives converged in a great setting. Crombie was very good in helping me visualize surroundings.

What does Michael Deehy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Deehy is a new narrator for me. His vocal changes worked for me in identifying the different characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the 15-yr old girl opened up to the Inspector. His handling of her showed a lot of research on the author's part.

Any additional comments?

I'll look for another of Crombie's books.
