This was a good story. I really enjoyed it. The hero was awesome, tall, sexy and handsome. I thought this being a Mobster type of book it was going to be more violent and full of erotica sex. It was not! It was well written not gory or erotica sex. There is sex but it is well written sex.
I liked the heroine as well. She was a strong character. Only one stupid decision made by her. But of course there always has to be at least one, which I am okay with. Its when there are many many TSTL moments.
I liked the story line and plot. There is lots of dialogue throughout the entire book. (I love lots of dialogue)
As for the narrator he did a very very good job. Everyone had their own distinct voice including the accents, and he did a very good job on the female characters. I will listen to him again for sure. (Well actually I am, because I just got the second book in the series)
I have to say this book and the next are fantastic deals if you are a KU subscriber. Both are free read free listen. Yes totally worth it!
Love to read and I am really enjoying audible. Fantasy and sci fi are my faves but I also enjoy period novels and historical fiction.
My only criticism is the male narrator 's female character voices. It's so hard not to think drag queen instead of beautiful 24 year old woman
I really liked the book, however, it was difficult to love it. In my opinion it could have been more detailed especially for being the first book in what appears to be a long series given the amount of sub-main characters involved, even if it had to be quite a bit longer than is comfortable for most listeners.
I thought the voices for the men were excellent, especially Gabriel's voice and the variety of accents; however, Eva's voice was less than stellar and Nico's voice while much better than Eva's was still lacking. (Practice makes perfect I guess).
I thought the ending was great and I liked that it was not a cliffhanger but did leave the door open for other characters' stories, i.e. Vincent.
I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again
Nice! a whole new genre of uber-Alpha bad boys to drool over and the mix is delicious.... there's Mob members made up of American, Italian and Russian underbosses, bosses and security men, then there's the Obsidian Devil's MC members in their sexy leathers and kick-ass boots and also various miscellaneous friends. And Scott Schumaker did a great job with the huge amount of character accents that's called for (especially Gabriel's deep sexy voice) and for bringing them all to pulse-pounding life which then changes a good book into a great listen.
Trying to go straight from his Mob roots the sexy, wealthy, confident, dominant and gorgeous businessman Gabriel has been asked to do a favor 'he can't refuse'.... to keep a protective eye over the Russian Boss' daughter because she's unaware of her underworld heritage which is putting her in terrible danger. So Gabriel's been secretly watching over Eva for a while and he has become more and more mesmerised by her grace and beauty until he can stand it no longer. So he starts a plan to meet, seduce and sex her out of his system and also give her a job working next to him. But he wasn't prepared for Eva's strong yet innocent character, their mutual sizzling chemistry, the soul-touching passion and a deep challenging connection that's about to mess with his head and rock his world.
From the first chapter this exciting listen grabs you, the flirtation and romance is intense with shocking secrets, revelations and witty banter. There's pulse pounding action as one of Gabriel's deadly deeds from his past has never been forgiven by his brother who's plotting his evil revenge, there's a mole leaking secrets and the full cast of secondary characters all have their parts to play in this gripping storyline with its suspense and twists. Told mainly from dual POV's but with other character's thoughts, actions and deeds which come into play too.
With a credit? I can't wait for the next instalment in the lives and loves of this extended loveable but dangerous 'family' of lovers, associates, enemies and friends. It was very creditworthy but, at $7.34 for a massive 11.5 hr listen, I just bought it, rejoiced and saved my credit for a more costly listen.
I loved this new series. If you love the Russian mob, the Italian mob, and an MC then this is the series for you. Oh it has mystery, secrets, romance and a whole new group of alpha hunky males. Just give it a try. Can't wait for book two.
I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!
A Love of Vengeance has everything that you could possibly ask for in a romantic suspense. The two main characters spent a lot of time romancing each other. And there was plenty of situations that kept you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what would happen. Gabriel Moretti is the rightful heir to the Moretti crime family but he walks away from it to attempt to lead a more reputable life. He even changes his last name. That doesn’t mean that Gabriel isn’t both feared and respected in the mafia world. One of the people that respects him the most is Russian crime boss Vasily Tarasov. Vasily asks Gabriel to protect his secret daughter Evangeline “Eva” Jacobs while Vasily heads off to Russia to hunt down the people that killed Eva’s mother. Unfortunately, Gabriel must also protect Eva from his vengeful brother Stefano who is the current head of the Moretti crime family and hates Gabriel.
Everything that affects these characters is rooted in their past. Vasily abandoned Eva and her mother so that they would not get caught up in the violence that comes with mafia life although it catches up with them anyway. Stefano wants to kill anything that Gabriel cares about because of a tragedy that affects Stefano’s fiancee’. And Eva loses her mother because of the sins of her father. In retrospect, it could be said that this is what happens when you try to escape fate. There are so many details that I just can’t give out because you have to experience the suspense for yourself. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to finish the book.
To be fair, the romance did not disappoint. Gabriel is smitten with Eva the first time that he sees her photo. He knows that he shouldn't get involved with her but he can’t deny their attraction. The sex between them is explosive and Eva is taken to places that she has never gone before. Gabriel’s growing affection for Eva forces him to face all of the demons from his past and become the man that he needs to be.
Scott Schumaker was outstanding with the delivery of the story.
Say something about yourself!
A fair storyline with somewhat developed main characters and many supporting characters that perhaps will have their own story in the future. The plot might be believable to some, but depending on the listener's tolerance and expectations it could fall short- it did for me at least. I had difficulty "buying" into the plot because in my opinion some of the mob/mafia reactions (and actions) were just too ridiculously "soft" :( I contribute a big portion of my opinion to the performance/ portrayal of the characters.
Memorable, hmmmm I would have to say that the climax of the story- sorry I do not like spoilers so I will withhold the details. I can say that I had high hopes as the rising action was heading towards this vital aspect and then... poof! I felt let down- my expectations were not met.
The key phrase "a good job differentiating all the characters" is the whole problem that I experienced. Dual narrators or a different narrator that could do an overall admirable job performing the male characters but also an admirable job of the females too!!! In my opinion, I had difficulty believing the entire plot because I could not connect to the characters. Why? First, the female characters (a whole two of them) were done very poorly- the best I can describe is that it sounded like a guy trying to mimic a female- no way around that in this particular case! As a result, the female characters were weak and therefore I did not believe in some of their thoughts, actions, etc.. As for the male characters- there were only three characters that sounded okay! just okay... For instance, Stefono- the head of a major mafia family came across as a dweeb- a ball-less dweeb. The voice did not fit the character at all. Again, I feel that in part, I could not connect to the story because I could not connect to the characters and this pattern just continued to until the very end. This might be one of these books that might need to be read and not listened to. Clearly, this is entirely what I experienced and felt while listening to the book... other listeners might be okay with the narration. Sadly, if the narration is difficult to listen too then it really f*$#s with my imagination and ability to see and experience the book :(
Yes, both were experienced because I kept hoping it would get better b/c I was determined to finish it.
I will continue to read this author's books because I think she is really great at her craft... I will just mark this one off as a fluke!!! For those that totally thought the narrator and book were fab... GREAT and more power to you! Different viewpoints are what makes our world continue to grow and change...To each his own! Happy Reading!!!
The book was overall pretty good. My one complaint is the male narrator reading the female parts was pretty bad. However, he was perfect for the male MC's voice.
Action, suspense and romance in a great balance! Good enough to make me download the next right away ! The narrator was very nice on male parts, squeaky on female parts, but considering how well he did the masculine portions, it's very forgive able.
This is my first book about bad guys being good guys. My daughter recommended this book and I’m so glad she did. I loved everything about it. Loved Gabriel, his total protectiveness of Eva that became love for her. Their sexual chemistry between the two of them was off the charts.
I liked his men, Quan and Jak, they were really protective of Gabriel. And I liked Alek, Eva’s cousin. I just loved Nika and Caleb, fantastic friends. And, wow, Vasily sure took care of those who’d killed Eva’s mother.
Stefano and Furio? No wonder they got along so well, they were both insane, for most of the book.
The only really stupid part of this book, which is the same in a LOT of books, was Eva listening to Furio’s threat and going downstairs to “protect” a room full of giant killers. Really? Rather than go to Gabriel and tell him about the call from Furio she she left, going to her death? Seriously? WTH makes authors do that? It’s the mafia, for chrissakes, and you want us to believe she’s going to save them all because, what? They can’t take care of themselves? It was so stupid I almost wished Furio would have killed her.
Except for that one ridiculous part it was a really good book, with some wonderfully written sex.
As to the narrator: He did a really good job. I especially liked his emotions when he was reading. He laughed when it was called for, snorted, whispered. It was nice. I don’t expect male narrators to do the women’s voices very good but Scott Schumaker did a fine job.
