Publisher's summary

Neal Carey has to keep the mob, the FBI, and a major television personality from killing his newest client—but he’s tempted to do the job himself.

Sometime student and ever-reluctant detective Neal Carey would rather be finishing a dull doctoral thesis than staring down the nose of a loaded gun—but his new assignment doesn’t sound dangerous. All he has to do is pull off the ultimate makeover: turn Polly Paget—a gum-chewing, foul-mouthed, big-haired broad—into a perfect lady in time to testify in a rape case against Jack Landis, head of the Family Cable Network and America’s most beloved family man. But Polly isn’t cooperating, and everyone—including a former FBI agent, an obsessive-compulsive hit man, the Mafia, a porn prince, and a slew of tabloid reporters—is on her trail, turning Neal’s “simple” assignment into a deadly game of duck-duck-goose.

In a hellish and hilarious escapade that takes him from the deserts of Nevada to the bright lights of Las Vegas and finally to a hair-raising climax in a shoddily built amusement park, Neal tries to escape the mob’s big guns while taking a slippery walk up the world’s biggest water slide.

Critic reviews

“Elmore Leonard meets Professor Higgins in Winslow’s latest high-spirited Neal Carey caper…Winslow’s dialogue zips along as smartly as the action.” ( Publishers Weekly)

So fun ti listen ro!!!

I must say, I found I got pretty embarrassed listening to this book. The reason? I was listening to it out in public and I could not quit laughing!! I'm hooked to this series. I really love how Don Winslow mind works. Just a single comment about a person's hair and I find myself laughing out loud. Writers who can tell me a great story and make me laugh too are my fav!! Of course, it's the perfect pairing of writer and narrator that makes it perfect!

Great series but gets a bit tedious

What did you like best about A Long Walk up the Water Slide? What did you like least?

I love this series--so well-written, but after awhile the plots get repetitive an the experience a bit stale.

Not up to others in series

Narrator is, as usual, excellent.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something off about this installment, or so it seems to me.

Fun fast Read(listen)

I'm new to the Neal Cary storyline and am starting with the first and heading towards #5 the books (I like all) definitely improve with each storyline.I got started with "Power of the Dog",then "Cartel" the masterpieces of Don Winslow (IMHO) loved "Winter of Frankie Machine" also. The Neal Cary books are lighter, perhaps more humorous, but great fun for sure.

Loved it!

Just discovered Don Winslow. His writing is tight - his characters are quirky - but very relatable. Stories remind me of old fashioned radio dramas. Love the Narrator - he really pulls the listener into the story!
Highly recommend this title and its Narrator!

Don’t miss the fun ride

Love the humor and how all the characters are so definitive and colorful. The Carey series is a wonderful diversion. The narrator is perfect. Joe Barrett is one of the best! Please keep writing Don Winslow!

Nice adventure

The twisting plot keeps you guessing on what’s next. I really enjoy the humor that is laced in to the story, it makes the adventure even better. The ending closes it out and left me with a smile.

A Difficult slide Ride

Weakest story in the series. I enjoyed the characters again but the story is dry cereal.
