From the killing fields of the East Midlands to the mean streets of London, from the jazz clubs and clip joints of Soho to the barren fenlands of East Anglia, this is a world of broken families and run-down estates, revenge killings and prostitution, drugs, guns and corruption; a world of overstretched police forces and underpaid detectives, men and women who strive nonetheless for a kind of justice; a world in which everything, even friendship, has a price. Featuring familiar characters including Frank Elder and Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick, John Harvey's stories perfectly encapsulate life in the badlands of modern Britain.

The stories are fine as are the narrators. What sucks is the WOEFUL lack of breaks between stories and/or any indication that the story title is not a random phrase out of context.
"No time to breathe"
This is the worst audio recording I have ever listened to. Each short story runs straight into the next one, without so much as a pause for breath, let alone the chance to reflect on the story just listened to. I don't expect much, but a few seconds grace would at least allow me to realise that the tale has finished. As it was, I was well into the next part before I knew it, leading to confusion and frustration. The stories themselves were unsatisfactory, but it was the presentation itself that meant that I couldn't bear to listen to part two. Modern devices go straight from one track to the next, so audible should consider this when releasing short stories, and plan a gap between them. I shall be very wary of buying short story collections in future.
I agree with the other review; it's so bad that there must be something wrong with this publication. Not only do the stories just run into one another but the narrative doesn't make sense. Some of the hanging endings might be a narrative device but after listening to several I'm left feeling that the final minutes of the stories are actually missing.
