Publisher's summary

A breathtaking thriller featuring “political and amorous intrigues, cold-blooded murder, and financial crises” (San Francisco Chronicle), from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Column of Fire

In 1866, tragedy strikes the exclusive Windfield School when a young student drowns in a mysterious accident. His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives.

From the exclusive men’s clubs and brothels that cater to every dark desire of London’s upper class to the dazzling ballrooms and mahogany-paneled suites of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, one family is splintered by a shared legacy. But greed, fed by the shocking truth of a boy’s death, must be stopped, or the dreams of a nation will die.

Very predictable plot line

I was disappointed in this book as it was formulaic and characters were like caricatures not believable people. No surprises at all.

A Banking Drama with Political Intrigue and Murder

this is my most favorite novel of all so far. far better drama then the World War II political sagas and the Kingsbridge series. better than his spy books and anything he's done. the narrator here is the first time I have heard him and he is a lot better narrator than Lee on the previous books. the narrator hear is you will not be disappointed but I suggest you devote long periods of time at each listen at least an hour and a half, and don't wait long in between listening brakes. I make a list of names to get them straight because there's so many and that helps me but it is really not necessary as Follett alwaysmakes it clear who the important character is with a reference to help you remember. I highly recommend this book.

One More Captivating Tale

There can be no debate: Ken Follett is a fabulous story teller. The characters are rich and interesting, and the plots, complex and unpredictable. Most of his other books have a worthy, historical-novel aspect, not unlike the James Michener books of the previous Century. However, this book has less of that, and more of a soap opera feel to it. Nevertheless, it is hard to lay down because the story really pulls you in.

Kept Me .....

.... interested from beginning to end. Follet never fails to educate me about contemporary society in which he weaves this well crafted story.

Classic Follet, entertaining, does not disappoint

What made the experience of listening to A Dangerous Fortune the most enjoyable?

I really enjoyed the story. As in other books, Ken Follett is great at characterization and you can really feel the book's heroes and villains come alive. The multiple plots, twists, and points of view are always entertaining and keep you listening. The setting in 19th century England is interesting, and it provides good insight into the banking world.

Good, not great

Story telling skills prevail and save the not most compelling plot and period piece. Energetic narration. Middle ages author's sweet spot.
