Publisher's summary

A breathtaking thriller featuring “political and amorous intrigues, cold-blooded murder, and financial crises” (San Francisco Chronicle), from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Column of Fire

In 1866, tragedy strikes the exclusive Windfield School when a young student drowns in a mysterious accident. His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives.

From the exclusive men’s clubs and brothels that cater to every dark desire of London’s upper class to the dazzling ballrooms and mahogany-paneled suites of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, one family is splintered by a shared legacy. But greed, fed by the shocking truth of a boy’s death, must be stopped, or the dreams of a nation will die.

Great story, narration could be better

Ken Follet never disappoints.this book kept me on the edge of my seat, however, I feel like I've been spoiled by listening to John lee as narrator. Michael page does a great job as well but it's just not as good as I'm used to. Anyway I highly recommend this book if your generally into Ken Follet novels.

Follett Fluff

A good period piece, it was interesting to hear about banking senior partners. The sex seems long and drawn out especially with Michael Page's clipped, rapid pace! It was entertaining to the end. But when it ends it is over, the listener is not left with anything for additional thoughts or feelings.

Least Favorite Follett Book

I have read most of Ken Follett's books and this one was my least favorite. The story line was slow moving and dull. Very disappointed in this book.

PREDICTABLE STORYLINE: VILLAINS REIGN

While I enjoy Ken Follet's books for the historical story line, he is always predictable about having the bad guys holding the power and justice does not happen until the very end. He needs to switch that constant theme up with another approach. This particular book was not as good as some of his others.

Addictively Entertaining

This book travels through time, exposing human nature's good, bad, ugly, and indifferent characteristics. From the beginning, the listener is captivated by the story and narration.
