Publisher's summary

The New York Times and internationally best-selling Danish crime writer Jussi Adler-Olsen returns with the third thriller in his exhilarating Department Q series.

Detective Carl Mørck has received a bottle that holds an old and decayed message written in blood. It's a cry for help from two young brothers, tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. After floating in the ocean for years before turning up, the bottle sat forgotten, unopened, on a police department windowsill, before the seal was cracked and the gruesome message, written in Danish, was analyzed. Could it be real? Who are these boys, and why weren't they reported missing? Could they possibly still be alive?

Carl's investigation will force him to cross paths with a woman stuck in a desperate marriage: Her husband refuses to tell her where he goes, how long he will be away, what he does while he's gone - or even what he does for a living. Isolated after choosing him over family and friends, she waits for days on end, and when he returns she must endure his wants, his moods, his threats. But enough is enough. She will find out the truth, no matter the cost to him - or to herself.

In this heart-pounding thriller, Carl and his colleagues Assad and Rose must use every resource available to uncover the horrifying truth set adrift in that bottle all those years ago.

Department Q comes through again!

A complex plot with quirky characters the story captures your attention even though it delves into the evil some people do to others as well as the long reaching results of that evil. Thankfully, the Dept. Q folks muddle along in opposition.

Clever, Gripping Read...

The characters continue to be revealed, all while the plot unfolds; wrapped in language replete with humor, intelligence, and wit.
Graeme Malcomb perfectly characterizes the cast. Bravo!

The best I've read so far of Department Q

Not so unremittingly dark, and with a good deal of dry, laid back humor. The best of the series so far IMO

Top notch crime thriller!

Another brilliantly intertwined department Q experience! Performance is outstanding. Couldn't stop listening. Riveting, though-provoking, kept my interest till the very end.

fascinating complexity

Carl, head of Dept Q, is still a lazy jerk, who struggles with a messy life, his cynicism almost winning against his basic decency, and the mysterious Assad is a terrific foil for him. Not exactly Holmes and Watson, but just as entertaining with humor deflating the pompousities and lollygagging. As usual, Adler Olsen has a psychologically damaged villain with a perfect crime plan and a socially relevant past, so it's the team from Q against the evil genius and beware of collateral damage! I'm really enjoying this series, and this one was nicely narrated.

Best so far! Epic timeline, suspense all the way

I have listened to the first four Dept Q books and this one is my favorite. I thought the suspense was maintained very well throughout the book. It was also a bit more believable a plot that 1, 2 and 4. Characters are well thought out and dialogue is good. Great twists throughout the book without the story going off the rails. Good action scenes also.

Another great book from Jussi Adler Olsen

Would you consider the audio edition of A Conspiracy of Faith to be better than the print version?

I only listen to the audio versions since I've developed vision problems.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the interactions between Carl and Assad. I want to know more about Assad. I liked the story line also. I wanted to get the the end but then I knew when I got there I would want more.

Have you listened to any of Graeme Malcolm’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Graeme Malcolm. I look for books that he has narrated.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think when I found out that Mia was still alive. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be trapped like that. It gives me chills because I am claustrophobic.

Any additional comments?

I'm ready to go to the next book. I'm alternating between Adler Olsen and Jo Nesbo. I don't know where I'll go when I finish all of their books.

Please get an authentic narrator

I am enjoying the department Q novels but I have been disappointed that the narrator is the least authentic danish detective novel narrator ever.
