A stunning debut thriller in the best-selling tradition of Scott Turow and John Grisham!

Alex Miller is a criminal defense lawyer leading the life he always imagined. At thirty-five, he is the youngest partner at New York City's most prestigious law firm, with a beautiful wife and a perfect daughter. When Alex's father suddenly passes away, Alex is introduced to Michael Ohlig, a rich and powerful man who holds an almost mythical place in his family lore. But Alex is surprised when Ohlig admits that he's in serious legal trouble, accused of crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Alex agrees to take on Ohlig's defense.

Through the course of two trials, secrets are revealed that force Alex to question whether any of the people in his life are who they appear to be. Most importantly, he must decide whether the identity he projects to the world is the man he truly is or even wants to be.

With its powerful voice, pause-resistant tension, and strong cast of characters, A Conflict of Interest will captivate listeners right up to its electrifying conclusion.

Critic reviews

"This outstanding first novel follows Defense Attorney Alex Miller and his young family through the grinding world of high-priced criminal defense in New York City, detailing what can happen to an otherwise nice guy. David LeDoux's minimalist narration style works well. He imbues all the characters with a distinctive sound and unique persona." (AudioFile)
"More twists than a California cloverleaf interchange." (Bookreporter)
"This gifted writer should have a long and successful career ahead of him." (Publishers Weekly)

High suspense

This story kept me engaged and wanting to keep listening without interruption, though it was a little hard to understand the main character’s poor choices as a seemingly intelligent and moral person. That said, I suppose that made it more interesting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Alex was fired.

Satisfyingly complete!

(As posted on GoodReads)
Great book. The suspense about the defendant and his supposed crimes as well as his relationship with the lawyer (Alex) and both of his parents and that of Alex and his family and co-counselor (Abby) was definitely twisted and complicated enough! And nothing was obvious or could have gone without saying! A well constructed legal thriller on many counts!

Where's a good sub-editor when you need one!

This story started well and become tedious; every minutiae of the legal proceedings! This book could have done with some good sub editing. Also, I love David LeDoux, but he was not the right person to narrate this story, he is far too boyish which made the main character seem immature and unable to accept responsibility which I don't believe was the writer's intention.

I kept waiting for a real plot twist...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was an enjoyable listen, but not a stand-out. It kept my interest but I kept waiting for something exciting to happen.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Eh. Pretty predictable.

Which character – as performed by David LeDoux – was your favorite?

None of them really stood out.

Could you see A Conflict of Interest being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes. someone will do it. I won't go though.

Very predictable Plot

Would you try another book from Adam Mitzner and/or David LeDoux?

Not really - I picked the big twist at the end 10 minutes into it and only really listened to make sure I wasn't mistaken.

Would you ever listen to anything by Adam Mitzner again?

This book didn't grab me and books written in first person narratives can sometimes work - like the Lincoln Lawyer, but this one didn't have the same intrigue.

What about David LeDoux’s performance did you like?

He delivered the story well and played the characters OK

Did A Conflict of Interest inspire you to do anything?

No

Guessed the ending but finished

it's not a classic, not something I'd keep around to listen to again and again. The story is well put together but leans over on the predictable side. but I didn't get so bored or disgusted as to quit the book altogether.
