Story
A brilliant literary debut, inspired by a true story: the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829. Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her.

Never tire of Anne Perry
Would you listen to A Christmas Journey again? Why?
A Christmas Journey is right up there with Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol". It wouldn't be Christmas without listening or reading either one.
What did you like best about this story?
Anne Perry has brought into the book some of my favorite characters from the Thomas & Charlotte Pitt series.
What does Terrence Hardiman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The voices of Terrence Hardiman are exactly like what I 'hear' in my head reading the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The entire book kept me 'on the edge of my seat.'

Suicide, Adultery, and Not Much Merriment
I am a BIG fan of Anne Perry and have listened to many of her books, but this one just did not set right with me. A bunch of spoiled, rich folks gathered together for a big Christmas party stretching over several days, and all they can do is gossip and insult one another? I did not find much to redeem these well-born guests who took it upon themselves to look down upon others. And the fact that Omegus Jones has to come up with a pact that all the guests will agree upon (to never speak of the entire ordeal again) if the one who caused Gwendolen Kilmuir, a young widow, to commit suicide will travel to Scotland to inform her mother of her death, is just outrageous. Finally, the arrogant, mean-spirited, Isobel Alvie, agrees to the arrangement, and Lady Vespasia decides to accompany her. There are so many contrived situations that I can't count them . . . and absolutely no merriment. Not a Christmas story here.

Vague message, good narrator.
I really like her writing style, and the narrator was great, but this was one of those books with confusing messages that make you (or me at least) feel like I missed a chapter or something.
The “... it was then that she knew” ending that has you going WHAT? What did she know?! And what did she do about whatever that was? And why do I care? What was this story supposed to do for me?

The best Anne Perry Christmas novella!
Descriptions of Scottish landscape at Christmas were beautifully done. You were right there with each gale and storm. Fun to read about Vespasia as a young mother, but puzzling as to why the children have not been featured in other books. Still, a lovely, lovely book

Yawn
Meh, this was quite boring. For a short novella, this was overly drawn out! There was not much point to the whole story which was supposed to be a mystery. Most of the book encompassed the journey -- hence the title -- of two women travelling to the dead woman's mother to hand-deliver a letter.
Although I own the book, I listened to the audiobook through the Audible Plus catalog. Had I read instead of listened, I may not have gotten through it. Narrator was excellent, so I can't fault him.
The story took place just before Christmas, and the ending ties in with the meaning of Christmas. Other than that, I can't see how this story has anything else to do with Christmas.
This is my first read from this author, and I love Christmas novels. She has written quite a few of them, so I'll probably give this series another chance and hope the next one is better.

Well…uh…it’s not the worst book I’ve ever listened to
If it were shorter, I’d say it was a fable. And…er…um…what did I just listen to??!

A Touching Christmas Story
I did not research this book before selecting it on Audible Plus. So, I was completely surprised to be listening to a wonderful story about redemption, forgiveness, and unconditional love of a friend. It was so beautifully tied to the Christmas message at the end of the story. I highly recommend this book.
