Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - This was my first time listening to a legal thriller, and I can safely say I’m hooked. I had always shied away from the genre, assuming that the plots were too fantastical – but this story has a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, creating a relevancy that will attract both newbies like me and established thriller fans. Mitzner delivers a character driven narrative, while seamlessly blending romance, criminal law, and suspense, keeling me guessing until the very end. Kevin T. Collins does a marvelous job narrating – the emotion that he pours into each character captivated me from the start. I felt all of the triumphs and setbacks of the case, and I found myself deeply invested in its outcome. I really hope that this duo works together again, but in the meantime I’m going hunting for more from both the author and the narrator. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The second electrifying thriller from the "gifted writer" (Publishers Weekly) and author of A Conflict of Interest.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Critic reviews

"Mitzner's courtroom drama is Grisham-like in suspenseful before-the-bench action....a wicked ride, with more loops and flips than Coney Island's Cyclone." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Ah, the crucible of the courtroom! Adam Mitzner understands its appeal so very well. Devotees of legal suspense will find themselves happily at home, zinging with the intrigue, reeling with the twists, and ultimately well fed with a satisfying (if shocking) resolution. And if you've been away from the fictional halls of justice for too long, A CASE OF REDEMPTION is where you need to come back." (Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full)

Excellent

I loved this book. The only reason I took one star away from the "story" is because I saw the ending coming a little earlier than I would have liked. That said, everything else was fantastic. The character development. The plot. The twists and turns as the two attorneys keep uncovering more and more lies their client has told. And the PERFORMANCE! Mr. Collins does an absolutely phenomenal job with each and every line, each and every voice, bringing the story to life almost like if you were watching it happen.

I really liked Mr. Mitzner's first book. This one is even better. As I said in my review for his first, I hope he writes fast!

At First I Thought It was Predictable....but

Would you consider the audio edition of A Case of Redemption to be better than the print version?

Yes, I think the narrator was overall great. If I had to give him a piece of constructive criticism.. I would say that he wasn't the best with female voices (most male narrators aren't), but he still was great with differentiating between the difference male characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, Dan. He was multidimensional and interesting.

What does Kevin T. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Rhythm and inflection at certain times where these aspects are needed (during the part when LD raps; during the trial).

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

When a celebrity lawyer seeks truth against all odds.

Any additional comments?

This was not my favorite legal drama audiobook (that would have to be reserved for a John Grisham story....The Testament? or The Firm?) BUT it is worth listening to.

Ending knocks your socks off

The first several hours were anything but thrilling. "A Case of Redemption" begins like a Grisham production in every respect: Little-guy lawyer, abused and kicked around by life and his former big-time law firm, spends most of his time in a drunken stupor. Suddenly, out of the blue, he lands the Case of the Century -- and along with it, a lissome young lady lawyer with whom he falls in bed almost before you can turn the page. In true Grisham fashion, these two are Underdogs with a capital "U". Not only are they without resources, but they have a quasi-disgusting client who shows few redeeming social values, not to mention that he looks guilty as all get-out. Worse yet, he lies a lot, including to his lawyers. Not just once, but over and over. (Perhaps the first big mystery is why, after getting lied to over and over, these two legal beagles so readily accept whatever he says next as truth, but of course that's a question for the ages.)

In any event, these two handsome young lawyers, hand in hand, set out to produce Justice for the accused. Quite frankly, much of the tale is so formulaic it's not all that interesting -- and real lawyers, beware. The author takes so many liberties with law and procedure it will have you jumping up out of bed yelling "Objection!" all night long.

That said, it has a helluva ending. Blew me away -- there were several big reveals, one I anticipated, a couple of others I didn't. Good stuff.

I don't normally recommend legal thrillers, but I'd read ('read', as in an actual paper book) a previous work by Adam Mitzner -- A Conflict of Interest -- and thoroughly enjoyed it. 'Conflict' was most definitely NOT a formulaic book. It was very unique, unusual, and I liked it a great deal. Unfortunately, that contributed to my frustration with the first half of this book because I was so disappointed. Much of this one is a cookie-cutter replica of every other legal thriller that's maybe sold a million copies but which doesn't hold much interest for me at all. That said, if you can handle a less-than-stellar first part, A Case of Redemption is well worth it for the ending.

Kevin T. Collins as narrator read very well, no problems there. But if I were casting this book, I would have picked someone with an 'older' more world-weary voice. Collins has a 'aw shucks, gee whiz', boy-scout earnestness about him that doesn't really fit a bruised and abused character like Dan Sorenson. I kept waiting for him to summon his dog Tige at any moment. Still, Collins got the job done, and that's what counts.

So go for it -- and block out a couple of hours for the ending. You won't want to be interrupted when you start to get close.

Some very interesting twists

Would you consider the audio edition of A Case of Redemption to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed the audio edition. I generally prefer audio to print because I can listen as I work or drive.

Any additional comments?

What I look for in a review is not so much the story-line, but rather how the person doing the review enjoyed the story/performance. The story-line I can get from the publisher's blurb.

In an attempt to be helpful to others reading the review I will say that I DID enjoy this book to the point of going to look to see if there was a follow-up. I was a little disappointed to see that there wasn't, as I'd like to know more about what happens to the main character from the end of the story.

Was it the best book I have listened to in a while? No. Not really. But I would listen to it again, and I would definitely buy a follow up should one come out. However, it isn't a Grisham or Michael Connelly, Nesbo, or a Mankel, or Martha Grimes. It's a great book to get yourself wrapped up into and for letting it be what it is.

Where is a detective when you need one?

This book suffered from lack of an investigator. On the other hand some of the clues were less than subtle and anybody, except apparently the main character, could have figured out most of the "mystery".

The part that came as a surprise was a bit abrupt and somewhat ill conceived.

Good legal thriller but ...

I like legal thrillers and enjoyed this one except if you are familiar with criminal law the main character will drive you crazy. So many times I thought, "This guy is supposed to be Ivy League? Seriously?" His legal reasoning and lack of knowledge of criminal law are astounding. The only excuse I could give the author is the desire to educate readers. There are better ways to accomplish that though.

Great twists at end! (be careful reading reviews)

STORY (legal thriller) - I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but then I'm a real sucker for legal thrillers. A lawyer who's depressed after personal tragedy finds himself bouncing back as he represents a rap star accused of killing his girlfriend. There's a lot of your typical stuff where the lawyer investigates the case against his client and prepares for trial, and if you're a lawyer you will definitely roll your eyes at some of the departures from acceptable courtroom procedure. But the book is still a great listen, and there are two really unexpected twists at the end. I didn't see either one of them coming, so I was totally surprised!

PERFORMANCE - Very good job, but wasn't awesome so I'm rating it four stars.

OVERALL - Recommended for anyone who likes the genre. Some cursing and a few sex scenes, but they're not very explicit. Be prepared to hear lots and lots of talk about pubic hairs. Eeeeek!

Kept my interest...

This book definitely kept me interested in the plot. There is an unexpected twist at the end. I am always afraid that when I write a review, that I will give away too much about the story. I never want to spoil the fun of listening to books. That being said, this book was worth the credit and I will listen to Adam Mitzner's next book.
