Publisher's summary

Enter the world of the Pendleton: The original owner became a recluse - and was rumored to be more than half mad - after his wife and two children were kidnapped in 1896 and never found. The second owner suffered a worse tragedy in 1935, when his house manager murdered him, his family, and the entire live-in staff....

Craftsmen and laborers working on renovations disappear or go mad....

For years, the Pendleton is a happy place, until a bad turn comes again....

Voices in unknown languages are heard in deserted rooms, everywhere and nowhere....

Disturbing shadows move along walls but have no source....

Images on security monitors show strange places that exist nowhere in the building or its grounds....

A young boy talks of an imaginary playmate - who turns out to be terrifyingly real....

A figure like a man but clearly inhuman is glimpsed in the courtyard gardens at night and in other locales, perhaps a hoaxer of some kind, seemingly oblivious of those who see it - until it suddenly takes an interest in one of them....

Dissapointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I love Dean Koontz. I truly enjoy his protagonists. This might be a better read, but as a listen if found it meandering. I had trouble keeping up with the characters and for the most part, never really attached them. The performance was good if not perfunctory.

Confusing Narrative

Any additional comments?

I have read many Koonz books, but this one disappointed me. It started off great as usual, but somewhere in the middle, the flick between different points of view just made the story less interesting and extremely confusing. The narrator was alright, not great, but not the worst I've ever heard either.

Disappointing for Koontz Fans

I was disappointed. I usually rave about Dean Koontz but this book didn’t “do it” for me. It was okay. It’s worth listening to as long as you don’t have the expectation that it will be as good as some of Koontz’s previous books.

Pretty good

Recommend the shorter version for audio. Pretty good story with A LOT of unnecessary description. Hard to follow for a while but comes together to make a fairly good story experience. 17hours was much too much, if your undecided on the length, go shorter.

Not as expected from Koontz

Struggled to finish it and only did out of respect to the author that I have always liked. If it had been anyone else, I would have deleted the file when nanotechs were mentioned. Definitely not one of his best.

Another sci-fi nightmare!

I love this author and I really can't see him writting bad stories. This is yet another amazingly, twisted, mind bender that takes you in to the future and human nature. It's worth the read. And kinda possible, scary huh?
