Publisher's summary

Enter the world of the Pendleton: The original owner became a recluse - and was rumored to be more than half mad - after his wife and two children were kidnapped in 1896 and never found. The second owner suffered a worse tragedy in 1935, when his house manager murdered him, his family, and the entire live-in staff....

Craftsmen and laborers working on renovations disappear or go mad....

For years, the Pendleton is a happy place, until a bad turn comes again....

Voices in unknown languages are heard in deserted rooms, everywhere and nowhere....

Disturbing shadows move along walls but have no source....

Images on security monitors show strange places that exist nowhere in the building or its grounds....

A young boy talks of an imaginary playmate - who turns out to be terrifyingly real....

A figure like a man but clearly inhuman is glimpsed in the courtyard gardens at night and in other locales, perhaps a hoaxer of some kind, seemingly oblivious of those who see it - until it suddenly takes an interest in one of them....

Drags out too long

This book isn't as exciting as Koontz's other books. The plot drags out too long. I'll give him another try.

I enjoyed this book.

I like Dean Koontz's books as much as I enjoy Syephen King. I enjoyed this book though not as much as some of his other works.

Take it or leave it.

I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz. This book was "ok" it does hold your interest but it wasn't one of his books that you had difficulty putting down.

Too little character development, good narration

This is more of an ensemble cast of characters than we are used to from Koontz and less development for each. I liked the plot premise and the characters could have been very interesting with more time spent on them. Honestly, this book could have had me on the edge of my seat but didn't quite get me there.
I liked the narrator though, his reading kept the book moving for me.

Good Book, Great Narrator

I enjoyed the story being told from each character's point of view. It can be a bit much when the switch takes place in a short time. The narrator is what brought this book to life for me. Got me good the first time I heard him voice "The One". The pace of the story is good. I don't think it ever really went dry. Again, the narrator played a big part in that. A couple of good plot twists that I won't spoil.

Dark and Delicious

The narrator does an good job with the voices, his female voices aren't the best I've heard although they are adequate. There are a couple of points where he doesn't say a word or rewords the sentence. The story is dark, but has the threads of hope and wonder that weave through Koontz stories and make them wonderful. The bravery of Winny is endearing and believable.
