Publisher's summary

Detective Lindsay Boxer is jogging along a beautiful San Francisco street when a fiery explosion rips through the neighborhood. A town house owned by an Internet millionaire is immediately engulfed in flames, and when Lindsay plunges inside to search for survivors, she finds three people dead. An infant who lived in the house cannot be found; and a mysterious message at the scene leaves Lindsay and the San Francisco Police Department completely baffled.

Then a prominent businessman is found murdered under bizarre circumstances, with another mysterious message left behind by the killer. Lindsay asks her friends Claire Washburn of the medical examiner's office, Assistant D.A. Jill Bernhardt, and Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas to help her figure out who is committing these murders, and why they are intent on killing someone every three days.

Even more terrifying, the killer has targeted one of the four friends who call themselves the Women's Murder Club.

Agree—stop the sound effects and music

Good story. But found the music to be annoying. Not only because it was there, over the narration, but because it was cheesy, superficial, and sometimes totally out of sync with the tone of the narration and distracting.

A rollercoaster of emotions

A prediction of what has happened recently? I don’t know when this book was written but definitely before Jan 6. Loved having Joe be introduced!

Unnecessary effects

I enjoyed the story. A couple of times I laughed out loud. I did a victory fist pump once. And I even caught myself tearing up at the funeral, although I won’t say whose, so as not to spoil the plot. But believe me, it was a tear jerker, especially if you read the last WMC book.

I enjoyed the narration for the most part, although her British accent for one character left a LOT to be desired. That said, she gets an A for effort. What I did NOT appreciate was the sound effects that were totally unnecessary, as was the musical inserts at specified points.

TO THE PRODUCERS: If you’re gonna use music to emphasize the moment of tension or suspense, you need to pick music that fits. Several times I thought the choice of music was incongruous at best and in one spot, downright laughable, which was entirely irritating. I almost stopped the recording; fortunately I was enjoying the story line so I soldiered on.

Luckily these sonic additions are scattered and not frequent enough to be awful, but they did get on my nerves by the time I was halfway into the story. What’s wrong with just reading the story and leaving well enough alone?

Voice Changed

Why oh why was Jill's voice changed to a Southern accent??? She's portrayed as ultra sophisticated and urban so why the drawl???

Bit far fetched?

Fun story even if it was a bit over the top. Sad in parts but worth a few hours of listening.

Best one yet

Finally a narrator who is worthy of telling the story. What I love about this series is the combination of hard, serious, often heart-breaking police work and a softer side to the characters and plots. I love this series and just downloaded two more.
