Publisher's summary

In My Gita, acclaimed mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik demystifies The Bhagavad Gita for the contemporary reader. His unique approach - thematic rather than verse by verse - makes the ancient treatise eminently accessible.

In a world that seems spellbound by argument over dialogue, vi-vaad over sam-vaad, Devdutt highlights how Krishna nudges Arjuna to understand rather than judge his relationships. This becomes relevant today when we are increasingly indulging and isolating the self (self-improvement, self-actualization, self-realization - even selfies!). We forget that we live in an ecosystem of others, where we can nourish each other with food, love and meaning, even when we fight.

So let My Gita inform your Gita.

Worth reading

Excellent depiction of the verses of the gita. He talks about bhagwat hota in his own interpretation and is present very well. One may want to read this again and again

Profound wisdom.

This book is the most enlightening book I have ever read till date. I dabbled in Bhagvadgeeta earlier but never got it. I often thought of it as a great argument done by Krishna to ‘convince’ Arjun to do what Krishna wanted him to do.

After reading this book I am convinced that this book should be called ‘Geeta 101’ or even better ‘Sanatan Philosophy for Dummies’. The chronological and historical summary of ideas in Sanatan Dharma are just what India requires today as an ordinary folk is showered with conflicting ideologies from different Schools while he/she assumes it to be emanating from a single source and thus ending up getting confused and giving up all together or end up being ambivalent towards the whole thing.

We do not even realise that the modern culture or religion or whatever we can call it these days is an alphabet soup of various ideas that originated at different points of time in societies very diverse from ours and for good measure got mixed up with foreign influences too. Most advocates of religion and culture possibly are ignorant of the chronology and the vocabulary of the scriptures and how the same word meant different things at different times.

Devdutt, the author (not his twitter low life version) is Brihaspati, I have no doubt on it.

This is my opinion.

A good listen for someone looking for an introduction to Gita

I guess I should have known that it’s not Gita itself but book on Gita.
If you’re looking for an introduction to Gita, it’s a great listen. Narration is done well to keep you engaged.
I however, was looking for a little more of actual content from the Gita and felt that it’s limited.

Opinionated by design

Its opinionated by design, but the interpretation is pretty solid and hits the right marks.

Narration was poor

After listening to Jays and reading several other books from the author, I was really looking forward to My Gita. While, this book lived up to its expectations, the narration was extremely disappointing. The narrator was unable to pronounce a lot of the words and names in the book and it took away from truly enjoying the book. I bought the kindle version as well, and will go back to read the book as opposed to the audible version.

My Geeta

I was yearning for years to know the story and interpretation of Geeta. Whenever I tried to read it directly, I could not get the full meaning. This book, with various perspectives, comparisons with other religions and logical interpretations, helped me to get some sense. I am still confused with their Hermit way and Householder way, when the ultimate purpose of life is Moksh then why to follow (rather prescribed by Krishna himself) householder way?

But the fact that Hinduism itself proposes infinite possibilities, it will take time to understand it…. I hope I would be able to satisfy my knowledge hunger with more such texts.

Shri Devdutt Pattanaik has put the points, with such deep meaning in an understandable way and I started loving his writings. Thanks and keep sharing your thoughts. I loved the narration of Shri Vivek as well, his voice is clear and with appropriate annotations, he made the listening of this book impact full.

Sheer magic.

It is just not Bhagwad Gita but much more than it. Really informative and worth listening.

excellent

this is an extremely paraphrased version of the gita, with commentary. however, i consider it the best explanation of the real meaning of the bhagavad gita.
