Publisher's summary

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography

"Sabar offers something rare and precious - a tale of hope and continuity that can be passed on for generations." (Publishers Weekly (Starred Review))

In a remote corner of the world, forgotten for nearly three thousand years, lived an enclave of Kurdish Jews so isolated that they still spoke Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Mostly illiterate, they were self-made mystics and gifted storytellers and humble peddlers who dwelt in harmony with their Muslim and Christian neighbors in the mountains of northern Iraq. To these descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, Yona Sabar was born.

Yona's son Ariel grew up in Los Angeles, where Yona had become an esteemed professor, dedicating his career to preserving his people's traditions. Ariel wanted nothing to do with his father's strange immigrant heritage - until he had a son of his own.

Ariel Sabar brings to life the ancient town of Zakho, discovering his family's place in the sweeping saga of Middle-Eastern history. This powerful book is an improbable story of tolerance and hope set in what today is the very center of the world's attention.

Fantastic story

Kept me hooked the entire time. Great blend of familial, reginonal, and Jewish history told from a personal perspective.

Well-told story

I really liked this book about an Iraqi Kurdish Jewish family, their customs, relationships, cultural experiences; focusing on the relationship between the eldest son who grows into an Aramaic linguistic scholar, and his American born son. It has a nice blend of history as well as personally drawn characterizations, and the narrator is just outstanding. I learned a lot in listening to it.

What an amazing story

It is an amazing story in itself, of a man coming from ancient community destroyed by contemporary world. The man who does not belong yet goes to achieve success which doesn't bring the feeling of belonging and fulfillment yet gives tremendous recognition. And of relationship between father and son born, raised and educated in worlds apart yet overcoming a lot to preserve the bonds between them. Wonderful!

Great story well told

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It is easy to listen to. The narrator mispronounced a couple of place names, but otherwise did a great job.

Very interesting story about Kurdish Jews

It had much more relevance today with the strife between Israel and its surrounding countries.
