Publisher's summary

Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle. Join Dragon Rider—and fan favorite—Murtagh and his dragon as they confront a perilous new enemy!

The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society.

Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air—and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini’s blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time . . . or to joyfully return.

Critic reviews

"Twenty years after ERAGON, Gerard Doyle's familiar and compelling voice returns to narrate MURTAGH.... Doyle's talent for accents and passionate battle sequences shines, complementing the author's vivid world. Murtagh's voice resonates with a Scottish lilt, and Thorn's is a deep, throaty rumble. Doyle's somber narration of their torturous upbringing will break listeners' hearts. Yet, amid the shadows, the narrative brightens as the inseparable pair confront seemingly insurmountable challenges--and triumph through the strength of their bond." (AudioFile)

"A much-needed follow-up centering a beloved character." —Kirkus Reviews

Should have been a short story

The story had good bones and excellent character development; however, it was simply too long. Eragon moved— the plot meaningfully progressed each chapter— Murtagh didn’t.

Audiobooks

From someone who just within the past year or two was introduced to audiobooks and Eragon being one of the first series I’ve listened to, I can honestly say that this book is living up to every expectation that I have had of this series! There are very few writers that I feel keep my full attention to a book and Christopher Paolini is most indeed one of them!

So slow it starts going backward at times

I really enjoyed getting to know Thorn and Murtagh. I wanted more from Thorn's trauma thread. So many times I wanted Paolini to continue into Murtagh's past but cuts it off at weird points. It is a slow moving plot when which be great with more world building. Instead there are points in the book that move at a snails pace, repeated themes over and over. None of the side characters, sub plots or new lands are fleshed out enough to fill the time gaps. There is plenty of anticipation and tension built up, it does feel like Poalini rides that anticipation harder than Seabiscuit at some points then abruptly you're going nowhere for a long time. Nasuada and Murtagh at the end......felt shoehorned in, We had so much time chapter after chapter then BAM! I will still absolutely read the next book, Poalini has left way too much hanging.

Love the book

I feel like Murtagh lost a lot of the prestige that he held in the previous books and became much weaker. I loved the book though the story was compelling and lined up with things that were previously mentioned in the story. I also have a question; is there blood line traits in the world of Eragon? Even pre-Blood Oath Celebration Eragon seems to have a lot more energy then Murtagh in this book. I did love the book please keep on writing and I’ll stay along for the ride until the end.

I liked it! Great job Chris

Overall solid book and a nice return to the world of Eragon! There’s new places to see, and new villains to fight, and interesting new ways that the magic systems of the world are explored. I always thought Murtagh being more of an anti-hero type was interesting, so it’s cool to get a book now that’s completely from his perspective and get into his mind.

Excellent Book - Fantastic Reader

The author has grown and so too has the storyline. The world of Murtagh is not for the faint of heart, but well worth the journey for those who love Alagaësia. Gerard Doyle once again gives voice to the story in an unparalleled fashion. 10/10

Incredible highly recommend

Absolutely loved it! Chomping at the bit can't wait for more tales from the world of Eragon. The parallels and callbacks to the original stories are masterfully done while maintaining a completely unique an fresh story all its own with its darker more somber and mysterious tone. Can't wait to explore more of the darker and more mystery reaches of the land and to revisit many of the beloved characters

Throughly Enjoyed it.

Really dives deep into who and why Murtagh and Thorn are who they are. I was hoping to have some interactions with other beloved characters in the Inheritance series books, but it was still an amazing story. Lots of twists and turns to keep you riveted. So happy Christopher Paolini is back to writing these books. I grew up on these and so happy there’s a new one. CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!
