Publisher's summary

In 1906 I was barely over 14 years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She said, "You've always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now you're going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?" I didn't understand, but I nodded my head anyway. It sounded strange to me, the way so many things did. I would do what she told me. I didn't have a choice, any more than I'd had a choice in being born.

A tough women with a tough life, yet very enlightening.

Every time something good happens in Maude's life something tragic would be up next. Her story of perseverance and dedication to her values and beliefs are amazing. As a whole her life's story is unremarkable, however the way she persevered through loss after loss, struggling through the depression and troubled marriages, is inspiring and shows depth in the life of all of us.

I found myself analyzing my life while reading this hoping that I'm not the type of husband that George was. I'm trying to be a good son like her Gene was.

The narration was excellent and made the book that much more enjoyable to listen to.

my opinion of "Maude" <br />

I enjoyed every word. I could hardly take a short break.
There are many Maudes out there but few Donnas who appreciate the beauty and meanings behind the struggles. "Maude" depicted a genuine love for her God and family who loved her back. She also appreciated hard work.

Fascinating!

This book had me from the very beginning. The story was remarkable, the narration was excellent, and the writing flowed at an fast pace without a single superfluous word. I will be thinking about Maude for a long time to come. She deserved this book. Thank you, Donna!

Lovely story!

I've read the book three times. The audiobook is well worth it! The narrator couldn't be better. She sounds like such a natural for Maude & the other characters. This story is special because of what goes on around Maude. From horse and buggy to WWI, WW2 and beyond. It's a life worth sharing.

Good story but stilted performance.

The story was captivating. But the narrator read haltingly and with a very flat affect. Her southern accent went in and out. Did not appreciate her narration at all.

A Truly Moving Story

I bought the book first, but found I was actually reading it aloud, really getting into the character with my own voice. This rather annoyed others in my home, soI then listened to a sample of the audible. It was perfect! The right tone and tenor. I swear it felt like I was listening to the real Maude! I am so glad I purchased it, the talented narrator, Shana Gagnon, enhanced the book as I laughed and cried with this unforgettable character. I have to say I was sad when the book finally ended, Maude had truly become real to me via this audible. I highly recommend purchasing it. I will be looking for more audibles by Shana Gagnon. 📖💗📚

Kind of depressing

Great story, although it's hard to believe that one woman can have so much turmoil in her life. I kept holding my breath hoping that things were going to go her way...doesn't happen.

One additional note on the narrator-- her flat affect is in character, not meant to be bland and unemotional, but truly embodies the "tone of Maude" I think.
