Publisher's summary

“Wit, by itself, is of little account. It becomes of moment only when grounded on wisdom!” and “Wisdom teaches us that none but birds should go out early and that not even birds should do it unless they are out of worms!”

Those are the words of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by the pen name Mark Twain, acclaimed as "the father of American literature" and "greatest humorist the United States has produced”.

Mark Twain had something witty and wise to say on just about any topic, and his words resonate surprisingly well today as they did more than a century ago. “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as much as you please” sounds as if someone is talking about today’s political landscape. But that is what Mark Twain said in 1890!

He was a defender of women's rights and believed, "What would men be without women? Scarce, sir...mighty scarce." He was against slavery and commented, "Our Civil War was a blot on our history, but not as great a blot as the buying and selling of Negro souls." He advised people to “keep a tidy soul” and believed that “The secret of getting ahead is getting started!”

Very thoughtful

I got this on a whim thinking it would be neat, and was pleasantly surprised! I found myself laughing at many quotes, as well as thinking very hard about others. It was a lovely spread of quotes!

Listen to this book and hear what Mark Twain may have sounded like.

Mark Twains quotes will make you think and wonder. The things he must have experienced in his lifetime.

The reader was delightful and sounded much like my image if he himself must have sounded if MT had read the book himself.

Worth listening!

Mark Twain Quotes of Wit and Wisdom is a fabulous audiobook that informed me and made me laugh and cry. My husband and I enjoyed it, our 6-year old granddaughter wanted to listen to it again. I am slightly in love with Stan Hardy now and cannot wait to share some of his work with my own daughter.

Let's listen and enjoy!

Before listening to this audiobook, I had limited knowledge of twain. He is one of the best writers I have ever listen to. His wit and veiled sarcasm made me smile. Easy to listen to and easy to follow. That is a rare quality. highly recommended.

Timeless Mark Twain Quotes

Whether you're a voracious reader or not, you've likely heard more than one or two of Mark Twain's infamous quotes. This audiobook gathers 2 hours’ worth of quotes and divides them by theme. I definitely knew some to me, and I could actually say them along with the narrator, while others were ones I had never heard. They're not necessarily all humorous, but I found the audiobook enjoyable anyway. The narrator talks with a slight twang and conveys enthusiasm for the sometimes zany quotes. Sometimes the narrator mispronounces a few words. For instance, he actually pronounced the state name of Connecticut—as in one of the infamous titles of a Twain book, *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court—as “connect-i-cut” and occasionally pronounced “pauper” as “powper.” If you like old-timey humor and universal insights into human strengths and weaknesses, you may enjoy this audiobook as much as I did.
