Publisher's summary

What begins as the sheer desire for adventure turns into a spiritual quest as a young woman comes to terms with her family, her dreams, and her first love.

Tania Aebi was an unambitious 18-year-old, a bicycle messenger in New York City by day, a Lower East Side barfly at night. In short, she was going nowhere - until her father offered her a challenge: Tania could choose either a college education or a 26-foot sloop. The only catch was that if she chose the sailboat, she'd have to sail around the world - alone. She chose the boat, and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, it was her home.

With only her cat as companion, she discovered the wondrous beauties of the Great Barrier Reef and the death-dealing horrors of the Red Sea. She suffered through a terrifying collision with a tanker in the Mediterranean and a lightning storm off the coast of Gibraltar. And, ultimately, what began with the sheer desire for adventure turned into a spiritual quest as Tania came to terms with her troubled family life, fell in love for the first time, and - most of all - confronted her own needs, desires, dreams, and goals. . . .

You will be amazed

I listened to this book courtesy of Audible with 86 years of sailing many waters in many boats. As I am too old to subject my friends and family to the spectacle of a debacle, I have done what I could, ordered 2 cruising guides to the South Pacific for armchair use, and am about to book a flight to Papeete. If you read or audit this book prepare to do the same or better just buy a boat.

This is an incredible story! This trip was undertaken without any high tech conveniences we now take for granted. An amazing feat!

Wonderful and Inspiring Story

Well told story about a young girl’s amazing solo sail around the world. Love how the story kept to the point with just enough side stories to help you to connect and understand.

A read that improves and grows with the book

The author initially struggled with delivery, but... As the book developed, she settled and ended up offering a fantastic read of her amazing journey.

By far one of my favourite sailing books and I was sad when it ended.

Wow, just wow - So inspiring

Incredible journey! Loved that this was read by the author. I feel like I know Tania, she shared so much of herself in such a raw, matter of fact way. I couldn't stop listening and as the adventure neared it's end, I too experienced the bittersweet mixed feelings of excitement for her to be safe and home, to a sadness for the ending of our time together.

Book of Inspiration

I woke up one day and decided I wanted to be a sailor. As a 19 year old girl myself, this book called my name. In the beginning I admit it was a little slow, but as you get to know the author you start to see the stories of which she retells. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever wanted to sail. It has inspired me to put action to my dreams.
