Publisher's summary

Beloved and bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson is back with a hilarious and heartfelt shifter romance featuring:

  • A delightful cast of shifters and supernatural creatures
  • Side-splitting hijinks that'll make you snort-laugh
  • A slow-burn romance that's still sexy as hell

Verity Lane might be a Shifter who can't shift (known as a "squib"), but woe betide anyone who tries to tell her who she is or what she's capable of. She's a proud member of a club for squibs out to prove themselves by participating in dangerous stunts. Which is probably how she ended up on this strange island....

Bear shifter Magnus Berne wants two things: to connect with his motherless goddaughter and to find out who keeps dumping dead bodies on his property. When he discovers Verity on his island, he's determined to get some answers, but it's clear that whoever has been killing squibs is just as resolved to keep it quiet. And now that Verity is in the crosshairs, they'll have to move quickly to stay ahead, stay alive, and stay together.

Heroine is immature and heartless

Mild spoilers

Did not like how the heroine handled the death of her friend. It’s like she didn’t care he was dead, there was little to no grieving and zero guilt. I couldn’t stand it because she played a huge part how he died. Her whole friend group is stupid and heartless. They don’t really care when their friends die, only when they might get in trouble with the authorities about it. These are adults by the way, not teenagers.

THE SHORT CHAPTERS DROVE ME NUTS!!!! BUT LOVE THIS

I was a bit thrown by the 1 word or 1 sentence chapters that I brought the book to ensure it wasn't a glitch. I hope this format was a test run, but I am not a fan of it, especially when the next chapter starts off mid action. It made me think I was missing something and I hated that. Overall the storyline was great and I love how Davidson is so sarcastic in all her books. I am waiting to see the next character and hope its Maggie, because, of course...SIMPSONS SPEAK.

Nowhere near as good...

The previous two heroines of this series personalities basically merged, but not in a good way. The narration was great, but the book was just ramblings of a food obsessed woman with unideal parents. There were no developments with the sindicate. The plot didn't have twists and turns, the ending was very obvious from early on. The romance between Magnus and Hungry Mashup Girl was just considered as inevitable and it was boring and chaste. Several mentions of seeing Magnus' equipment but rarely anything about what she actually finds attractive about him. The chemistry just wasn't apparent, and it wasn't much of a slow burn because it never really built and smoldered, Anette/Lila just got drunk and threw herself at him in a cringey way... Honestly I pre-ordered this because I thoroughly enjoyed Bears Behaving Badly and Wolf After My Own Heart, but this was a big disappointment. Save your credit.
