The poems themselves best explain this phenomenon. The typical Collins poem opens on a clear and hospitable note but soon takes an unexpected turn; poems that begin in irony may end in a moment of lyric surprise. No wonder Billy Collins sees his poetry as a form of travel writing and considers humor a door into the serious.

I don't even like poetry but Collins poetry is different than the rest. I am so glad that he has recieved all of the recognition that he has.
Humour, sensitivity, sadness and lots more.
Professional female with little time for the fun things (cooking, reading and traveling)!
I could hear the amusement in the author's voice as he read his poetry. It brought it to life; felt like he was talking directly to me.
We played this in the car on a three-hour trip. I thought we would listen to a few min or so of the performance and switch to something else. Neither my companion, nor myself wanted to turn it off until there was no more; and we wanted more.
Love to read, and Audible has made the two-hour daily commute enjoyable!
Poetry is to be listened to. This was my first chance to find a recording of Collins reading his poems. Many were included in "Sailing Around the Room" which was very fun along with some new ones.
Forget how you may think about poetry, and give Billy Collins a try. I will be buying more of his audiobooks in the future.
