Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30: Learn to Speak and Understand Swedish with Pimsleur Language Programs

Regular Price:$113.35

Publisher's Summary

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! This course teaches the rikssvenska (or Standard Swedish) dialect, spoken in and around the capital region of Stockholm. The first ten Units of Pimsleur's 30-Unit Swedish Comprehensive Program, replaces the Compact Swedish. Swedish Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking/giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking/giving directions, and more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items.

In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 11 and provide you with an introduction to reading Swedish. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

What the Critics Say

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

    "Effective and pleasurable"

Starting from complete zero you are still perfectly able to learn basic Swedish with very little effort and in a pleasurable way. Importantly they make it dynamic in terms of "interactive" dialogues, but specially in terms of phrase structure. You get to "play" with the word order when the sentence requires so, and surprisingly with their lead you get to do it naturally! This creates a comfortable zone for you to dear open your mouth and trying express your self instead of being blocked if you don't remember by heart the exact thing you are supposed to say.
Further, the speakers they chose have very pleasant voices and accents, in striking contrast to many of other of these books. I bought so far 5 different audiobooks to learn Swedish. The other four were an irritating waist of time that make you loose interest and courage. This book is clearly pretty expensive, but SO WORTH IT!! :))))
    Go for it and enjoy!

    "Worked like a charm"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this Swedish language program. I did each lesson twice, once in the morning and once in the evening. My Swedish girlfriend and her mother were amazed at how fluent I became. Not only that, but a few months after I had finished the program, a family friend of theirs came by and thought I was Swedish... Success!

    "Learn Swedish While You Walk"

I took my first course in Swedish 16 years ago now. It was ad hock some classmates of mine, one of whom knew Swedish offered to teach. I jumped at the chance. Up till then I had little opportunity to learn the language of my ancestors, and with a name like Bror everyone expects you to speak Swedish. I had tried numerous different programs but really couldn’t find anything that worked. I remember checking out Pimsleur at the time but could only find a program with about 6 or so lessons. We had trouble finding a textbook or any program really to help us in our endeavor of learning Swedish.
I have used the Pimsleur method for numerous languages at this point. If I want to learn a language I check to see if Pimsleur has it. There really isn’t a better program out there. They drill the language while you’re learning so what you do know becomes second nature. They constantly build on the last lesson in such a way that you play with the language and before you know it you know the language. I recommend it to friends and they say things like “I learned more in two weeks than I learned in four years of high school French,” or “I wish I had this when I was taking German in college. I might have learned something!” So as I was perusing their list I noticed that they had done a larger course selection on Pimsleur and I thought I would test it out, mostly to see if it was something I could now recommend to friends who were wanting to learn Swedish, but also because I had noticed watching “Wallander” that my pronunciation was getting sloppy due to the fact that I always read and translate (every day), but I almost never speak or listen to Swedish. I was very impressed.
I still wish that Pimsleur offered three phases of Swedish rather than just one. They offer five phases for more popular languages like Spanish, German and French, but three phases for most other languages like Hebrew. Still if you want to learn Swedish, this is where to start hands down. I guarantee that there is nothing better on the market today, other than possibly a trip to language school in Sweden. (And that possibility is slim.) Pimsleur gives you working knowledge of the language within these thirty days that becomes reflexive. After this it is really a matter of improving your vocabulary, you know the grammar. I mean you know it. The grammar becomes instinctive. But you will also have a nice base of vocabulary to discuss things like travel, daily plans, food, and so on. You will be able to speak about what you want to do, and what you have done. And you will be comfortable listening and interacting with native speakers of Swedish as well as reading it. And you can learn the language while taking a daily walk! Pimsleur doesn’t tie you down to a computer screen or have you hunched over books at a desk or table. Just put the earphones in and start walking while you listen and repeat.
