"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
I've just finished unit 10 and am still in awe of how much better this system is than what I've tried before (high school Spanish, other audio tapes, and DVD lessons). My accent is MUCH better since I'm not trying to fit the English pronunciation onto the Spanish spelling. I've even started to roll my R's despite my high school teacher having written me off as a lost cause in that regard. Yesterday I sat next to a Spanish-speaking family in a restaurant and actually understood some of what they said. Judging by the pace of new words introduced, I feel confident that with four phases available, I'll be fluent enough to really consider myself a Spanish speaker once I finish them. And as I progress through the levels, I have yet to feel overwhelmed. New words are introduced at just the right places, while old words are reinforced. If you're reading this and trying to decide if it's worth trying, my advice is YES!
I have been using Rosetta Stone for 8 months now and although I have learned many nouns and verbs, I have had trouble putting these words into sentences. Pimsleur helps me think in Spanish. I can now hold a conversation and understand un poco. Sometimes my friends join in to learn a couple of phrases!
I can't wait to finish all Pimsleur Spanish!!
After writing an earlier review criticizing the course for lack of written materials, I was pleased to find the PDF that accompanies the last units of Phase 1. Unfortunately, the vocabulary in the PDF differs from the vocabulary that was presented in Pimsleur Spanish 1 downloaded from Audible. I called Pimsleur and learned the version of this course we have available from Audible is an older version of the course, and we have not been given the correct PDF. The PDF available with the last units of Phase 1 is also the PDF that's also avialable of Pimsleur's site, but they don't have previous versions of the written materials there, so we are out of luck.
Other than this major disappointment, the audio presentation was excellent. Without written materials, though, I have a hard time distinguishing Bs from Vs and other letters. I would help tremendously to have the right PDF to study.
I have reported this issue to Audible.
Even though I've had 7 years of Spanish in school and can read Spanish and make out what others are saying if it was spoken slowly, I never made much progress actually speaking, because I was constantly translating each English word in my head. This method simply skips all of that, I try to turn off much of what I have previously learned and enjoy the simplicity of this method and cannot believe my progress.
Coffee is a food group right next to chocolate, right?
I assumed all the advertisements and such were hype, but I have to say, this really worked for me to get a good general working Spanish. I've tried others and Earworms is good for travelers, Rosetta Stone is a flop. This is the best I've tried so far.
I spend 2 hours a day commuting to works and back and I felt it is such a waste of time. So this course turned out to be a great to fill for that time. I do a new lesson every morning and then recap it at night on the way back. I keep rerunning difficult parts until I get it solid. Basically if you are in a situation like mine it's hard to think of anything better than learning a language. By the end of the first lesson I was able to put together a sentence that I can use in a real situation, also, by the end of unit 10 I started making out the words from the Spanish radio station I listen to. What's not to like?
Pimsleur lets you learn a new language like you learned to talk when you were a baby. You start by listening and repeating what you hear. You do not start with grammar and vocabulary
The key is to listen every day and to repeat a lesson if you are not confident. I am surprised at how easy it is.
I 've tried at least 10 other programs over many years in an attempt to gain fluency in a second language. But each program bored me, confused me or annoyed me. I would get frustrated because after years of trying I knew the basics and didn't want to start over but didn't have enough knowledge to start at intermediate. Pimsleur was my solution to that. Pimsleur doesn't feed you the standard basics instead you start with small bites of conversation that continue to expand and change over the course of several lessons. You pick up language almost immediately because you're learning language like a child does...by using it. I love being able to buy this series over time as I get more and more comfortable.
I've learned loads of languages with this method and it's the best I've ever found. Love it's now on audio
