I only review language programs that are easy, fast, effective, portable, inexpensive & teach you to really speak and understand languages.
Wonderful female native French speaker with great accent. Knowledgeable English-speaking American instructor. Fast-paced and challenging yet highly supportive of the learner. Same great memory technique as with the “Power Spanish Accelerated” and “Power Italian Accelerated” programs, which I’ve also tried. (Romance languages are my casual interest.)
As in the two ‘Power Accelerated’ audio programs from Language Audiobooks I just mentioned, the Power French lessons are concise and to the point. No long explanations, no fluff, only what you need to know to communicate effectively. Excellent choice of vocabulary words and phrases. Practical. Can be used in most situations the visitor might find him/herself in while touring France, or Quebec, for that matter. Very complete program that I believe takes the learner from novice to high-intermediate level French with sufficient practice. Listen to this program again and again and again and you’ll learn to speak and understand a bunch of useful French in very short order.
This seems to have an good combination of repetition and springing forward to learn new words and phrases. I get tired occasionally of the repetition, but I think it serves the purpose of reinforcing the basics. The french speaker is very easy to understand, with a clear, pleasing voice - different from several other audio books I've sampled. The one thing I wish this offered is a course outline showing the words and phrases in writing. I'm more of a visual learner, and not seeing the spelling of the words (even though this is a refresher for me, not completely new) is a bit of a hindrance. But, overall, this was very useful and easy to listen to.
I just finished Power French I Accelerated for the first time. I am amazed at what I have learned.
I have tried virtually every French language program available on Audible and Amazon, and I have to say that Power French is by far the most effective program I have used by far.
1. Frobose breaks all the rules and therefore forces you to hear and learn real French. Most other language programs candy-coat their presentations, dumbing them down to make them appear to be effective when they clearly are not. Power French I is as fun as it is challenging, but it really raises the bar and motivates you to learn to speak more French than you ever dreamed possible.
2. Huge amount of vocabulary that is presented in a memory format so you can actually walk away from each lesson speaking more French than before you started it. It’s all super useful vocabulary. Stuff like “Now that I think about it” or “I would like a glass of red wine, not white wine”. And it seems at times that there is no method to the madness UNTIL you realize that you have not been babied, you have been TAUGHT to speak a huge amount of French, and even learned to put it all together in your own sentences.
3. When I say that Mark Frobose breaks the rules, I really mean that he is not a conventional teacher. For example, he doesn’t just teach the present tense in the 1st program. He actually threw in future and past tenses into a first level program. Heresy for traditional French classes and programs. Unheard of.
Brilliant, because I understood it right away since he explained it in a simple fashion in English and then Chloé the native French teacher simply spoke it and I learned it. In a traditional program, the teachers would make a huge deal of this and say that you could never be ready to learn this level of French so early, even though that’s how we learned English, and how the French learned French. It’s all thrown in together. Frobose manages somehow to teach this natural format in a way that really clicks. He organizes all of this mess into an interesting, fun, and yes, challenging format that really makes you want to continue. You’re never bored when you are really learning, and this program keeps you learning until the end.
I am now ready to start the program all over again, and I am sure that I will learn as much or more from it the 2nd time as I did the first, and never ever be bored. So much quality instruction for so little money. It would be wonderful if all language teachers could teach like this, but Frobose is a one of a kind marvel and I thank him for what I have learned from him.
On the recommendation of a friend who has been using Language Audiobooks programs for some time, I ordered Power French and Power Italian Accelerated to prepare for the trip I just took to Europe. Here is what I experienced with Power French 1 on the learning end of things:
Cheap - Easy to Use - Fast Learning - Good Retention Technique - Great for my IPhone
Here's what happened when I got to France after nothing but a few weeks with Power French:
Could say Please Thanks You're Welcome - Could count - Could ask for directions and order food - Could sound like I had studied and spoke French for a while even though I hadn't.
I didn't understand a lot of what was being said to me while overseas, but I got the gist of a lot of it from Power French, and I could speak really basic sentences. Virtually everyone understood me. Excellent program.
If you took French in high school and haven't used it in, ooh let's say a couple of decades, then this is really great. I don't think it'd work for someone new to French, unless they know a similar language (maybe Spanish) and have a real aptitude for languages.
But, as a refresher course, it's great.
I am an audio and visual learner, so I depend heavily on both when learning a new language. I love the approach of Power French Accelerated. The voices are the best I’ve heard, and I can’t believe how much French I am speaking and understand. Very enjoyable, and I especially appreciate the awesome Listening Guide Transcript that came with the program. Pimsleur French is good too, but they don’t offer any written material. Frobose does, so I read and study my audioscript at night and then listen and practice with just the audio during the day in the car and while on break at work. This supporting written material with its clear explanations is the icing on the cake of this beautiful program that continues to amaze me with great learning and speaking ability every day.
If you already studied french and know how to pronounce this is a great audio assistance for you. There only thing is that there are 3 of these books, which means you will spend more money buying them all but at least you'll acquire the knowledge forever (literally)
I've learned Spanish through other methods and I had great success with this audio book. I am cramming French in a short timeframe for my first trip to Paris. I listened in the car and while doing chores. Before long I could order food, greet people, get around easily and understand how verbs translate The program infuses the repot ion of words in a way that causes you to easily to remember them. The narrators are awesome.
This is it.
Mark and his narrator bring together the key elements of learning French. My friends and I recently went to France, and the four of us tried all the major audio training methods. Marks' was the one all four of us agreed was best. We actually practiced in the car on our tour. I've decided to pick up his Portuguese books on Audible as well.
Just the right combination of conversational construction. Pacing was about right, perhaps a tad too much review of basic sentences. But overall it was really good. I have studied French in the past, but the other three had not. All of us got something out of it, and very quickly.
No. We listened to it over a matter of four weeks, and reviewed it we went.
I don't think you'll be disappointed in this. I would start with this one, and if it doesn't fit, try others. You'll save some money!
"Helpful aid to learning basics...."
Seems to mimic the method used by Michel Thomas by taking pronouns (me, you, they, us etc) and adding basic vocabulary to create simple sentences, so good for beginners to grasp some basics quickly. Jumps around a bit which leaves gaps in actual learning and unfortunately makes remembering a greater challenge as logic/progression disappears. Doesn't really cover any tense beyond present nor really discusses some key areas of grammar. Overall good intro for a non speaker and aid for a beginner.
If it is to provide something more than a basic intro then very definitely.
"Excellent French Lessons. Loads of material"
I have not found the print version, and only listened to this via Audible download. I have purchased several products by this author (Mark Frobose) and I do highly recommend them. I took off 1 star because I could not find a downloadable PDF booklet of this product, if one exists. (His other audible French lesson products "Behind The Wheel" 1 and 2 come with full download PDF books of all the material you listen and learn). However it is an excellent system, clear, with good amounts of repetition, a solid start for beginners, and a fairly fast pace to move through new material.
I'm finding this very good to replay and re-listen to. in the 8+ hours it covers a lot of different topics and material. I fully plan to listen to it at least 6 times from start to finish, and on each time I often stop a chapter and rewind it to re-listen to the last half hour or so.I'm going to learn this stuff in record time, I swear!
"Customer service non existent"
The author describes himself as America's most trusted language teacher. However, altho his website promises to respond to queries within 48 hours I sent in two queries weeks ago (an initial query and a follow up) and both were completely ignored.
"Best and easiest way to learn"
Having tried several ways to brush up my French, Mark Frobose has been the best by far. Bite sized chunks so you can go over any section again easily if you choose.
Would highly recommend, especially for those of you who have a base knowledge and would like a quick, but effective refresher.
Very impressed with the learning methodology, it works tres bien!
Just need to amend the jingle, I keep singing a native New Yorker
