Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 230 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic; Brazil; and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur's Brazilian Portuguese teaches the São Paulo metropolitan accent.
Portuguese (Brazilian) Level 1 includes 16 hours of spoken language practice and one hour and 20 minutes of reading instruction in thirty 30-minute lessons.
In the first 10 lessons, you'll cover the basics: Saying hello, asking for or giving information or preferences, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You'll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level but with near-native pronunciation skills.
In the next 10 lessons, you'll build on what you've learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items.
In the final 10 lessons of level 1, you'll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. The past tense is introduced, so you'll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past as well as make plans for the future.
Reading lessons begin at the end of lesson 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading Brazilian Portuguese. These lessons, which total about one hour and 20 minutes, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A reading booklet PDF to be used with the audio reading lessons is included. Also included are an audio and a PDF of the user's guide.

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
Fantastic car companion
This course makes you speak Portugese. And speak. And speak. Suddenly you find yourself walking around mumbling Portugese phrases to yourself. A great way to learn languages, for sure.
I got this when I started dating a Brazilian woman so I could better understand when I was around her friends and family. It has been incredibly helpful! Pimsleur method is my go-to when learning a new language, and I have used it for learning Japanese and Cantonese as well. What I liked best about this program is that it included a reading lesson with a PDF. It's the best intro to a new language. I got about a semester to a year worth of learning in 30 days. It's definitely worth checking out, and works especially well if you follow up with a speaking partner, authentic reading/listening materials, and continue your studies after you finish.
No matter what language you're learning, the Pimsleur system is the best for perfecting your pronunciation. The Brazilian speakers presented here in Phase 1 are very clear, and as a bonus they exhibit some natural variation in Brazilian Portuguese speech, while remaining quite faithful to the standard pronunciation of words and phrases. Highly recommended if you're considering learning this beautifully seductive language.
