What is the Michel Thomas Method? The Michel Thomas Method teaches everyday conversational language that will allow you to communicate in a wide variety of situations, empowered by the ability to create your own sentences and use the language instinctively, having absorbed the vocabulary and grammatical structures. These all audio courses were perfected over 25 years by gifted linguist and teacher Michel Thomas, and provide an accelerated method for language learning that is truly revolutionary.
Lessons 1 7, the Beginner course: This course makes no assumption of knowledge of any language other than English and gives the beginner practical and functional use of the spoken language. It is also appropriate for anyone who has studied French before, but has forgotten much of it or does not have confidence in speaking. The Beginner course is designed to take you from complete beginner to intermediate level.
Lessons 8 11, the Intermediate course: This course is for those with an intermediate level foundation in French, or those who have completed lessons 1 7 and want to take their learning to an advanced level and speak French proficiently and easily.
How does it work?
Unlike most language courses that focus around topics or grammar forms, the Michel Thomas Method works by breaking a language down into its component parts, enabling you to reconstruct the language yourself to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. Within the first 10 minutes of the course, you will be generating complete sentences on your own. It is important that you complete the lessons in order. The Method is successful because it builds on the language you learn in each lesson and 'recycles' language taught in earlier lessons, allowing you to build ever more complicated sentences. Because the Method is based on understanding, not memorisation, there is no set limit to the length of time that you should study each lesson. Once you feel you have a good grasp of the language taught in one lesson, you can move on to the next.
In lesson 1 of the French Beginner course, you'll learn how to make simple statements and ask questions with…- similarities between French and English; words ending in ible and able: 'possible', 'probable', etc.- 'it is' and 'that is': 'that's life'; 'it is good'; 'it is very comfortable'- 'for' and 'with': 'for me'; 'with you'- 'not': 'it is not…'- 'like this, like that'; 'I'm sorry, but…'- words ending in ant, ent, ary, ance, ence, ion, ical: 'important', 'different', 'necessary', 'difference', 'importance', 'condition', 'practical', etc.- pronunciation and word stress- 'I would like (to)…'; 'will you…?/do you want (to)…?'- 'to speak'; 'to come'; 'to eat'; 'to go'; 'to know'; 'to do'; 'to give'; 'to spend (time/money)'; 'to dine'- question words: 'where?', 'how much?', 'what?', 'which?', 'what sort of?'- time expressions: 'this evening/tonight', 'at the present time'- 'thing', 'something', 'the same thing'- polite expression: 'please'- 'the'; 'a'- 'do you have…?'- 'of': 'what sort of…?'- 'in'; 'to'In the next lesson you'll learn about word order and pronunciation, and how to say what you must and can do.

I took French lessons at school but it never seemed to make sense. After this first book I believe that I am speaking better French than after 3 years at school
I can't believe how much I learned in 1 hour. I can recommend this to anybody who wants to get away from lists of vocabulary and wants to truly learn to speak French
"Easy to follow"
I Felt like I really took all the information in, I just wish each book was a slightly longer lesson
"The way of thinking French is transformed!"
It's really eye opening to think about French language.
I thought I have to study all grammars and remember words.
This is great transform thinking of French language! And it leads very smooth transition from English to French.
This is great way understand that how to start to learn French!
Not as easy as it's described, but still very good. so much is covered in lesson one that you could probably re-listen a hundred times and have more to master. well worth a go.
"The incredible method of Michel Thomas"
Michel puts you at ease immediately by stating under no circumstances should you write what he says or take notes or even try to remember. He seems to make you remember things without you doing anything but listen and answer.
He places you in a group of two other students, usually one slow to pick up the lesson and one quite good. You seem to slot in the middle. He over emphasises pronunciation to drive home words.
He was an incredible teacher and I'm so glad that his method is recorded for future generations.
"Useful and clever system"
I found it very useful but one of the students in the audio confuses the listener and the teacher tells her off constantly, it can get on the way.
The first15 minutes are wasted. Needs more practice time to develop dialogues but provides the learner with good tools to build on.
The teacher doesn't teach to use est que in the questions and i have been told that is a huge grammatical mistake. However, I like the system and I recommend it.
As part of the Michel Thomas series this follows the format of all their language course, two people learning French with a teacher who you listen to. One of the pupils is usually better than the other and their mistakes can become distracting as you hear what you then think is correct only to have it corrected by the teacher, I don't find that feature helpful, other listeners may do though. Each lesson is the perfect length and they follow the common format of listen, pause, repeat, listen, confirm and move on. You can down load the accompanying pdf script online which is also useful. I would recommend this series although I think it is a bit pricey for what it is, there are probably cheaper options out there, but I get so many of those monthly credits that I don't know what to do with them.
"Great basis to start!"
Love it so far, easy to follow and a good way to build up your vocabulary.
There are less expensive and better ones on the market. I personally preferred the content and style of the Paul Noble, Collins French series.
"The most enjoyable and easiest way to learn or re- learn conversational French:especially good in preparation for a holiday."
