"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
I really like these Pimsleur lessons. Having never taken French before, it is interesting to try this and I am glad they take the words apart or I would miss some of the sounds.
Monsieur I believe. He sounds a bit stuffy?
We have only been doing the first part.
Yes. We did Unit 1 and it was just right for a cup of tea and new language.
I find these relaxing.
I was not very good at languages at school and always found it difficult. The way Pimsleur teaches you to learn French is a brilliant method that I wish my school teachers had known. They teach you through conversation and repetition at just the right moment for maximum retention and recall. It is interesting and a great way to practice speaking French out loud. I would recommend it to any beginners wanting to learn French for the first time.
Took a college french class and no one could understand a work I said in French at the end of the class. This helped me say the words and not worry about spelling or grammar. The french have an annoying way of not pronouncing the end of most words and conjugated verbs all sound alike to me. Pimsleur just put them in sentences I could understand then reviewed them often. This worked out so well I eventually bought Phase 1, 2 and 3. Now I can actually carry on a very basic conversation and understand a fair amount of conversation in french. I did listen to each section every day and sometimes repeated the section. French does not sink into your head automatically, but if you just listen and repeat lessons each day it is pretty amazing what sticks. I did dishes, laundry, went to the market or ran errands while listening. Made boring chores more interesting and learned basic French.
Estate planning lawyer and mom to two boys. My older son liked audiobooks as an infant, and I've listened to a lot since then.
While I appreciated this intro, it didn't make me want to buy the full course. I was looking to brush up French from 40 years ago and this was too basic and pretty boring. That said, it is certainly an approach that works for some folks. And if I was a total novice, it might have been better.
I was disappointed, partly because of the lack of adequate explanations.
I downloaded this when I was exploring programs for learning French and was immediately turned off. It expects the learner to learn by rote. I was also even a bit bored; consequently, I didn't continue with the program.
For those of us who are visual learners, Pimsleur offers no written French, and we don't learn to read the language. This also means that when we travel to a French country we are handicapped as we will have trouble reading what we need to read. French has many silent letters that we are unaware of with the Pimsleur approach and that we won't recognize when we see them.
"french phrase 1"
i find french more pleasing to the ear than spanish which i learnt some years ago,but being rather long in the tooth its not sinking in so fast,i like the method its gives you time to assimulate more easely.
I found this audiobook to be clear, concise and well structured. Highly recommend. Five stars .
I got this taster course for free. Unit 1 isn't all that useful by itself, as most of it is taken up by how to use the course. The course (Phase 1, if you by the other units) tends to provide a sentence, and then breaks down all the words in the sentence, and the pronunciations for the words. This is a useful intro. As it was free it was worth tasting and seeing if you could work with the Pimsleur method. If it's not free, its not that useful as a stand alone unit.
